Now Kazakh LGBTQ activists are petitioning the Kazakhstan government and local lawmakers to scrap the new anti-LGBT propaganda law and other discriminatory policies in Kazakhstan.

Religious police in Malaysia raided a hotel in Johor Baru, arresting two women sharing a room together, earlier this week.

Nine officers from the Johor Islamic Religious Department conducted the hotel raid, coming across the two women who were sharing a room, and finding a sex toy during the search of their room.

According to Malaysian laws, the two women could face a fine of 5,000 Malaysian ringit (US1,575) or up to three years in jail and six strokes of the cane if they are proven to have had a same-sex relationship.

A recent federal court decision means that lawsuits fighting gay marriage bans have now been won in more than 20 states, including southern red states like Arkansas. It seems that even conservatives are slowly coming to terms with the idea that whether or not they support marriage equality, the law inevitably will.

It seems like a cause for celebration. Maybe it is, and I’m just being jaded and cynical. But the furore over the rights of gay and lesbian couples to marry, which has dominated the public discourse about LGBT+ rights in recent years, has also been a smokescreen obscuring much more serious and debilitating issues facing queer and trans people, particularly youths and people of colour.
