June 3rd: Zoe Zimmer’s Coming Out in Ms. Marvel (2016) #16-17
I wasn’t really sure if I should call this my favorite Coming Out arc/scene, because its hard for me to pick favorites about things that can vary so much across mediums, stories, and characters. But this is a very very good one, and an important one for me personally. I think the real beauty of Zoe as a character and of her coming out is that at the point of her coming out Zoe had already changed so much since she was first introduced and though she is forced to come out by a villain, she makes it her own and controls what she can about it. Also Zoe doesn’t come out to be with someone, the way that so many characters do. She does it pretty much knowing her crush doesn’t return her feelings, but she’s brave enough to face those feelings & the situation anyway. Not just for Jersey City’s greater good, but for her own good as well.
Zoe’s Coming Out is actually the reason I even picked up Ms. Marvel. At the time, I was just beginning to dabble in comics (mostly Wonder Woman & BTVS) when I saw the above panel on a Tumblr post. It was a bit of a spoiler, but it led me to what has been one of the most heartfelt, fun, and inspiring series of my life. Across any medium. Ms. Marvel is a beautiful book, filled with beautiful characters, and incredible stories just like Zoe’s. If you haven’t read it already, I highly recommend you do, comic fan or not.
