"It’s like you’re a magnet. I know I keep saying this, but I’m quite certain about my heterosexuality, and yet I can’t stop thinking about kissing you." Before Elias could respond, he swiftly leaned forward, their lips pressing briefly, and pulled away. "There. The urge already feels like it’s subsiding. Can’t you do something to lessen your persuasive powers around me? Otherwise I’ll have to kiss you once in a while, so I can actually concentrate on what you’re saying instead of blankly staring at your lips."

"Why, are you planning on rejecting me?" Malachi tosses his cigarette butt off the porch, and it lands in a clump of leaves. A curl of smoke rises as the glowing end sears through the dry, decaying plants. Malachi tilts his head and watches as the smoke sparks into flames. "Most people are afraid of being denied, but I don't get that. Rejection allows you to purge, to burn everything down and start over."

"I guess it depends on the kind of rain." Malachi shrugs, his hands searching for his pockets. "That sounds like a question from some online personality test. Like if I say I don't mind the rain and make no attempt to seek cover, then I'm some kind of depressed weirdo who pushes people away and wallows in self-loathing." He squints at Elias, scrutinizing his frail frame. An amused smirk appears on his lips. "Are you already trying to evaluate my psyche? We barely know each other. And I think we're both more complex than you're giving us credit for."
