I’m all for dismantling hegemonic notions of what (and who) constitutes a selfie-ready body, while also cultivating an awareness of the role privilege plays in determining who is allowed to declare themselves selfie-worthy. It’s also worth examining who is allowed to go unadorned and who is celebrated in various states of unadornment. Who are the gatekeepers of selfie culture? How does mainstream media representation (and by extension, capitalism) impact selfie culture, not only in terms of inclusion, but also in terms of the behavior of active participants with regard to selfies? Also, what does it mean when unadornment in the form of #nomakeup selfies is both liberation and social currency to be earned, spent, and exchanged for power?
