Thinking about the weapon "Ruler" in Magical Girl Raising Project and how its presence and utilization is 100% the most thematically brilliant part of Unmarked. In comparison to the later novels and to dark magical girl fiction at large, Unmarked (The first arc, which was adapted into the anime) often stands on pretty wobbly legs, but that weapon...

It's named by Swim Swim after Ruler. Her idol who she got killed, who she loved so much, who inspired her, who she murdered so that she could follow in her footsteps. Swim Swim mourns Ruler with each one of those footsteps that she follows, and her signature weapon is named for that matter.

Swim Swim is a tragic villain. The author has said he wished he hadn't decided to kill her in the end. She was a child who was following directions. She didn't have the scope to understand anything beyond that. And she died for it, and her signature weapon was taken up by Snow White, the one who survived. Ruler, named for a dead girl who once nearly killed her. Ruler, used by the girl who saved her from that fate. Ruler, used to break apart the system that had created the situation in the first place. Breaking the cycle. Always remembering. Carrying on that memory.
