MS Myth: Only Old People Get Multiple Sclerosis

False

While you can get Multiple Sclerosis at any age, the average age at being diagnosed is between 20 and 50 years old according to the National MS Society.

They also have estimated that in the United States there are 8,000 to 10,000 people with Multiple Sclerosis 18 years old and younger.

Another 10,000 to 15,000 18 and under have had at least 1 symptom suggesting MS.

They believe 2% to 5% ( 2 to 5 out of 100) of the 913,925 with MS had an episode before age 18.

MS Myth: Multiple Sclerosis Is Contagious

Since 1868 when Jean-Martin Charcot, describe the disease now known as multiple sclerosis there's not been one case reported of somebody getting MS from contact with another person.

The CDC doesn't require anyone with multiple sclerosis to be put in quarantine.

While it's not known specifically what causes MS, according to the National MS Society it most likely is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

MS Myth: Only White People Get Multiple Sclerosis

MS occurs in most ethnic groups, including African-Americans, Arab, Asians and Hispanics/Latinos, but is more common in Caucasians of northern European ancestry.

Research is finding MS is more common than once thought in African-Americans and Hispanic/Latino-Americans.

There are some ethnic populations that rarely if ever encounter Multiple Sclerosis. They include Australian Aborigines, Hungarian Romani, Hutterites, Inuit, New Zealanders, Norwegian Lapps, and Yakutes .

MS Myth: MS Affects Everyone The Same

No 2 people with Multiple Sclerosis are exactly the same. As an example one person may have numbness in a foot. A second person can have vision issues., A third person may have urinary incontinence, and a fourth person may be paralyzed. Even within a family where there are several members with MS each path or course is different,

MS Myth: Multiple Sclerosis Is A Death Sentence

According to the National MS Society it’s not; statistics back this up showing a nearly normal life span. Any deaths are due to complications from the disease.

MS Myth: People With MS Will Need A Wheelchair

Results of a survey that was completed before the first disease modifying drug was available showed only 1 in 4 (25%) of people with Multiple Sclerosis were wheelchair or bed bound according to the National MS Society.
