Young Chippewa's Lead the Way at MSU Open
The Chippewa's traveled to Michigan State this past weekend for their first tournament of the season and no other chip had a better outing than freshman Brent Fleetwood. The Delaware native continued his success from high school into his first collegiate tournament by winning the 125 lbs weight class and going 4-0, in the Freshman/Sophomore division. Fleetwood started the day strong with a 6-3 decision over Jake Bellis of Harper College, those 3 points would be the only the young chip would allow on his way to the championship match. The Championship match put him against Mitch Rogaliner of Michigan State, in dramatic fashion Fleetwood would pull out the 2-1 tie-breaking victory over the in state rival Spartan.
But the young Chippewa's didn't stop there. Justin Oliver, a native of Davison, Michigan, started the day off with a bang beating his first two opponents with by a tech fall before taking the decision over Josh Pennell of MSU 9-2. Oliver outscored his opponents 40-3 before he would be beat in the semi finals from a sudden victory loss to Alec Pantaleo of Michigan. Oliver would fight back in the 3rd place match and dominate for a 14-4 major, to claim 3rd place in the 149 lbs class of the Freshman/Sophomore division.
Other Chippewa's placing in the Freshman/Sophomore Division include: Tevin Machart 4th; Cody LaCount 5th; Jordan Atienza 6th
Look to see more success from these young Chippewa's as the season continues.
