Mount Huashan

Mount Huashan is regarded as one of China’s five sacred mountains located south of Huayin City, 120 kilometers east to Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. Five major peaks stand towering in the south, north, east, west, and middle that if you see if from afar, they look like five petals of a lotus flower; hence its name, Mount Huashan (which means ‘mount of flowers in ancient times’).

Mount Huashan is formed by gigantic granite rocks that were weathered by time. The mountain body looks like a vast square column towering toward the sky, thus its awe-inspiring precipices entails it the fame that there is only one way to climb up to the summit.

To Get to the Summit

In order to climb the mountain, you’ll start from Yuquan Temple (Jade Spring Temple), up with a murmuring stream, through Wuli Pass, Stone Gate, Saluo Ground, MaoNv Cave (Hairy Girl Cave), and Cloud Gate to Qingke Ground, then from Qingke Ground to Wuyun Peak. From Qingke Ground to Wuyun Peak, the north peak of the five peaks, is the most dangerous and strenuous journey climbing. Up to Huixin Rock (Mind Changing Rock), there may be a crevice leading upward to the summit, this leaves people with no other choice but to ascend the mountain path which looks like a ladder dropped from a helicopter. The reason why it is called Mind Changing Rock is because people with less courage may flinch at having to ascend this “ladder”.

Not only is Mount Huashan famous for its natural beauty and magnificence, but it is renowned for cultural and historic important. Great poets like Li Bai, Du Fu, and Gu Yanwu left their footsteps and stories there. Thousands of poems, inscriptions, and travel notes, as well as rock carvings were devoted to this ancient mountain.

Modern Day

Mount Huashan attracts tourists from all over the place, and in order to prevent fatalities from happening, safer routes were built to ensure safety. There are many hotels around the mountain for tourists, allowing for a better chance to stay and enjoy the views for a few days. Some of the dangerous routes of Mount Huashan are closed off. Not only that, metal rods and wires are put around for saftet measures.
