Geologists believe Mt Kenya, the remains of a volcanic plug, used to stand 6100m above sea level but around 35% of the original mountain has been eroded. It now stands 5199m above sea level (17,057ft), in its own national park, just north of the equator. Often shrouded in clouds, it is best seen in the early mornings.
