The Mount Soledad Memorial Cross is unconstitutional because it conveys the message of “state-endorsed religion,” a federal appeals court ruled on Jan. 4.
The Mt. Soledad cross in the wealthy area of La Jolla, San Diego, was ordered removed by a federal judge in Dec. 2013. I have long opposed this cross, because it is on governmental property and whose purpose is to endorse Christianity.
It supposedly became a war memorial, when challenged as unconstitutional. Now I have learned there is a bit more history. Jews were denied the ability and right to buy homes in this area until the 1960s. When those who were Jewish, or perceived to be Jewish, asked about houses to a realtor, they were told there were none available. So even Albert Einstein would have been denied.
But the cross might have been put up originally with an intention to tell Jews that they are not wanted or tolerated in the community. I can' be sure that is true but the cross in this specific area which banned Jews from buying houses, does make sense.
