Wei Ying is found on the streets as a child by a traveling merchant in need of an heir. Said merchant was also an ex disciple to the Jiang sect and thus knew Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren before all three left. The merchant/sometimes rogue cultivator teaches Wei Ying what cultivation they knowledge they have but most of the time it’s either Wei Ying’s genius and experiments that create new innovations or the resources a travelling merchant is able to get for Wei Ying to learn other concepts.
As heir to a travelling merchant’s growing business, Wei Ying experiences:
1) meeting important characters ahead of time due to meetings the merchant has to make trade deals
2) Wei Ying is able to see more places and learn more able the importance of gossip and how to seek more information from reputable sources
3) Wei Ying learns the value of his inventions and skills as his new guardian teaches him the skills needed to thrive
4) said guardian also kicks the idea that “one must remember what someone does for you rather than what you do for someone” to the curb and instead teaches about contracts/giving back to the community/favors/friendship/family. Each one has a different level of expectation for the parties attached to it but most of the time it should be equal amounts of give and take.
Changes that may or may not happen due to this:
1) Part of the Giving Back Initiative: Wei Ying uses parts of his found to create a foundation that offers opportunities to children that are less fortunate like he was:
a) orphans that have no support are given opportunities to learn technical trades early as the mentors are also ppl in need of heirs but there are stipulations that sometimes they must leave the village they are in to go to an entirely different place;
b) After begging his mentor to set it up in the with the Capital city, they have approval to set up a tiny school in Yiling with the support of the Emperor in order to get teachers to work there under volunteer terms. The hours the teachers are their count towards a new policy of charitable hours the Emperor requires for citizens hoping to become a government official.
C) meeting the Dafan Wens early and seeing the suffering they and other wens are experiencing from their own sect and others, Wei Ying with his guardian supervising sets up a contract to open clinics in each major sect with a Dafan Wen acting as head healer in each one. Per the contract a sub clause by each of the major Sect Leaders (except Wen Ruohan) states that for every 2 wens working in the clinic, there must be 2 native children being taught as apprentices.
D) using an idea from a fic I read, Wen ruohan found out that Wei Ying is his grandson via Cangse Sanren being his and Baoshan Sanren’s biological daughter (shared with Lan Yi) and thus “hand wave” is no longer evil and instead keeps trying to tempt his baby grandchild to become his heir. While this may cause second hand embarrassment to whoever is watching Wen Ruohan be a simp, Wei Ying does his best Wen impression and uses it to his advantage by eating up the affection and also getting guards to watch over the clinics and schools.
E) In Jiang sect, due to the gossip Wei Ying wants to confirm that his is not a bastard, thus his guardian reveals the secret that while he is biologically Wei Changze’s so , truthfully before Jiang Fengmian’s forced engagement, his parents and Jiang Fengmain were in a polyamorous relationship. However, in order not to cause troubles between the Jiang and Yu sect, Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren decide to officially remove themselves from the Jiang sect. The relationship was the reason Jiang Fengmain ceased able to pick Wei Ying’s courtesy name. A) there is still tension from Madame Yu regarding Wei Ying’s existence but now that he is Wen Ruohan’s officially declared grandson, she can not make any moves towards him without causing a war and thus she makes it her life decision to just never been within 100 feet of him at all times.
