Event 005: Gifted and Stolen

A TALE TOLD....

Moira Devlin is good and dead and the ashes have settled on both her coffin and the entire affair with Tabitha Spencer. The wolf has been found not guilty and whatever is happening with the circle leaders regarding Jose’s possible guilt has nothing to do with you. Peace at last. Only for a moment though, because you and your friends and your fellows are always so well aware that something is lurking beneath the shadows of this place, a darker underbelly that hopes to take advantage of those that are hiding from the light.

What better a time for distraction than the late Orator’s will reading? It’s been scheduled, planned and postponed a million times over as event after event prevents the people she led from mourning her. The daughter that hadn’t been expected has surely surprised the masses - and she’s been left nearly everything there is already - but Carmen Blakely has been tasked and she will never not fulfill a mission. Besides, there’s going to be wine there. And many, many eyes, all curious and hungry to know what sort of treasures the prodigal daughter has been left to live amongst at the Devlin Manor.

But that isn’t the only invitation being whispered about right now. Only a select few are privy to the other affair, but when there is something big amongst the Midnight Underground, you can be certain that there is something even further below. The Black Market has reached out to it’s contacts and is putting on a special auction. Not that you would be any the wiser unless you were invited. The Market and the people in it keeps their affairs quiet to avoid any suspicion from the creatures they’re stealing from. Unless, of course, they have something to buy or sell.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE GAME...

There are a few things rolling out in regards to this. Though the Auction is very hush, hush, the will reading will be open to the public. Some things of note are:

It will be taking place at the Devlin Manor on Friday, February 10th at 4 pm.

There will be delicious foods, spirits, and candidates curiously mingling around.

The dress is cocktail hour appropriate.

There is added security at the event to ensure no repeats of what happened at the New Year’s Event.

Damian Harker’s Gingerbread Jubilee

Mundane traditions do nothing more than bore me and yet Damian Harker demands to have them all the same. While he does live amongst the Midnight Underground, apart of the Circles the Gods are sworn to protect, he prefers to endear himself to the Unaware as much as possible. Perhaps the ploy is to help the creatures of the night to maintain their humanity for as long as is possible. Remember your roots, you might hear him say. So many of you were not always hidden in the shadows.

Much like the Halloween festivities at Pete’s, the Gingerbread Jubilee aims to bring a bit of wholesomeness into the revelry that consumes. While the Unaware will be present in troves, the children and their families of those within the Underground are encouraged to come celebrate. What harm could it possible be to mingle with your peers? You all live together, don’t you? To remain ignorant of the other side is to remain foolish in all endeavors.

He hopes to remind all his fellows that the light is not so scary a place. It can be warm and soothing if you know where the look. Not to mention, the gingerbread is a family recipe, one he claims will leave you wanting more.

Connor and Esmeray’s Winter Solstice Party

Dance With Wolves; The Solstice of Lykos— once and very many millennia before, the old world was speckled with floating islands of varying sizes, uninhabited by any but the children of Artemis and Apollo. Or so is the tale. Dekémvrios was a most interesting one, set right off a cliffside and hidden amongst the clouds, shielding the lúkos from the rest of the world. They were the first wolves, larger than any you’ve seen before and blessed with a strength so deadly, Artemis thought it best to keep them from their smaller counterparts…but still, they would thrive under the shadow of night, closer to the moon than any other. For many years, Artemis had left them to their own devices, trusting the elders to maintain order in their packs; for many years She had watched from afar, sat on the cliff’s edge, eyes shifting from molten gold to opalescence as she surveyed her children. Her wolves were the sweetest distraction; so much that she’d forget the dangers of loitering amongst the children of men while in a form most resembling their own. The story isn’t clear as to who could have slighted the god, but she was pushed over the edge on that day of the first snowfall, tumbling over the cliffside and onto the forested expanse of Dekémvrios.

Thereafter, it was Her children who stumbled upon Artemis, covered by the snow and vulnerable to the dangers of the island. And it was Heinrakles, a wolf of umber fur that laid with the Goddess, lending Her his warmth through the coldest night of that year as she slumbered; shielding her from the wind and the snow and all else until a distressed Apollo came looking for her. The Goddess of the sun carried a still-slumbering Artemis back across the veil, where She slumbered for another three days and two nights; when she awakened, she could remember nothing of the night save the wolf that had kept her warm through the night. When She could stand again without the help of Her love, Artemis left the realm of the heavens and visited the floating island once again, to find Heinrakles and the rest of Her children. They had all earned Her love by virtue of existing but he, the largest wolf, towering over Artemis Herself, had earned Her endless blessings. As he kneeled before Her then, She pressed her lips to the top of his head and deemed that his would forever walk beneath Her light.

Connor and Esmeray Talbot have few things to celebrate at the end of the year. They also have a few things to celebrate, so I think perhaps it best to allow them to relish in these little achievements. The couple has taken to married life quickly and bought a house together in Summerlin. Esme is determined to turn it into her personal petting zoo though if her husbands determination to not deny her anything runs quiet so deep is anyone’s guess.

Along with a house warming, this celebration will also be for Winter Solstice. Many of the Underground celebrate the day though I dare say none are quiet so fanatical as the wolves. They claim that Winter Solstice is the day that Apollo blessed them for taking care of Artemis when she fell. Their gift was this: a night longer than any other for them to enjoy. The Talbots hold this tradition especially close, as the Henry middle name comes from the wolf who supposedly kept Artemis from freezing to death.

Please arrive at least ten minutes before the scheduled time on the invite, as there is a special surprise taking place.

All electricity will be off for the evening and in it’s place candles will be used

Lantern making and then releasing into the night (do not tell Connor this reminds of Tangled)

There will be rosemary shortbread, yule cake, mulled wine, fae wine, and various other holiday foods

A special stop and sing birthday song for Connor himself and his birthday twin Chloe, accompanied by a cake he’s made himself

Celebrate long and enjoy the beginning of winter at last. And happiest of birthdays to the children of both day and night.

Hollis Fiala’s Poelnaran Celebration

Poelnaran; Celebration of Winter and Sound— a celebration of the Mother Below's First Gift and the First Punishment, encapsulated in the story of one of the Firsts. Children in the Fae are told of the story of this beautiful being called Payna who lived in the mountains, voiceless. They wished to sing to the stars above but the sounds wouldn't reach them; the Mother Below, taking pity on Her sweet child, gave them the gift of sound and song. Suddenly the thoughts in their head and emotions in their heart could spill out into the aether…where before they had an audience but no strings on their lyre, Panya now had all the tools to play their sweet music; to sing their sweetest song. So Panya began singing to the suns that sat high in the sky, and when they would sink beneath the horizon, Panya would sing to the stars above. For a century they remained on the mountaintops, keeping winter from falling to the valleys to kiss the softest blades of grass. After years of solitude, Panya had exhausted their stores of food and drink; there was no choice but to venture further then.

When they came down from the mountains to the nearby village, they found that the Mother had turned their stars into villagers, as the stars had loved the stories that Panya had spun and the songs Panya had sung; they wished to know Panya, and wished to share in their own stories as well. For some time they exchanged tales of many lives lived, and for some time they existed in harmony, stardust made flesh, both children of Her light. Unfortunately, Panya continued to spin stories shrouded in dishonesty, to sing lies because the people of the stars could not understand their untruths; as this continued the town ate itself like an ouroboros, falling to perdition as Panya filled the space with dishonesties. To rectify this faux pas, the Mother Below came down from their heaven and placed a pin of iron through Panya's tongue, so that they may never lie again. If the Fae Folk could lie before, this was a gift that they squandered. Each year thereafter, the children of Her light celebrate the migration of the snow from the mountains to the valleys, they dance as if carried by the wind, decorate the expanse of their realm in the colors of the season, provide offerings to the Mother Below and spend the days of snow in silence to offer their respects to Panya.

The Heir Hollis has decided to allow non Fae to participate in this years events. All people who arrive will be asked to put on an enchanted masquerade masks to differentiate them from the Fae. They are not able to be removed until after you have left the Other Realm. Once you have received your mask, you will step through a tear in the veil into the Fae’s home - a grand ballroom. All doors will be locked and you will not be able to exit unless through the entrance you came in. Still, how exciting and evening to see such wonder and splendor, to experience the luxury that the High Court’s High Society lives in.

This event will take place on:

December 25th-26th beginning at sunup on the 25th and going to sundown on the 26th

Caveat to the party:

All members attending the party will be forced to wear a mask, as is tradition in the festivities and a way to indicate who does not belong across the veil once the party is completed. They also cannot be removed once you have crossed into the Other Realm. Mask assignments are as follows:

I admit, I miss the festivals of old. So much more intricate and formal and much more willing to host a fitting sacrifice. An a siren allowed cross the veil and asked for a private audience with the Heir themselves no less? How strange. Best to keep an eye on that.

Karnstein Kafe’s Holiday Hodge Podge

While many winter holidays may be over now, that has not stopped Rina Mochizuki from allowing a moment of celebration at her Kafé. A vampire for longer than she will tell you, she has decided to combine many of the holidays to help her friends of the Underground celebrate to the best of their ability. It isn’t the traditional time for celebration, December 29th is closer to New Years than the Winter Solstice, but then again, she’s never been a particularly traditional woman.

That and her cohabitant, Ludovicus Hummel, has kindly (certainly not through threat or force) opened up his shop upstairs for browsing as well. I would not linger too long but there are many curiosities there that may interest you. Perhaps most of all the Unseelie Fae who owns it.

Karnstein Kafé will also feature may delicious treats from around the world’s holiday celebrations that will leave you satisfied. She’ll also be selling her regular treats as well. It’s not everywhere you can get a substitute of human blood in sanguinaccio dolce after all.

While there may not be anything over the top or fancy about the Kafé’s Holiday Hodge Podge, it does offer a cozy place to take a loved one for a moment of peace amongst the busy winter season. The food is delicious, the company is divine, and the curiosities are wondrous.

Thaddeus James’ Looking into the New Year Party

Thaddues James’ Looking into the New Year Party has been a time honored tradition in the Midnight Underground. The event has been going on for a decade come this year and the party will be even grander than all those before in celebration. He has rented out the entire top level of The Strat for the celebrations. Only a few know the true reason for the affair, a reason to celebrate him and his beloved’s nuptials eleven years ago, when they kissed at midnight to bind their lives together forever more. They certainly may not be the best kept secret of the Underground, but much of their lives are still shrouded in mystery.

As with every years, the Oracle himself will be selecting a member from the party and inviting them to have a personal reading from him. Though he is more controlled on what he sees than the average seer, there are never any guarantees. This does not stop people from clambering over themselves at a chance to uncover the unknown.

Attendance is never required at these events, though if you are of the Power circle, there may be gazes cast your way for not at least popping your head in for a moments time. Thaddeus will be counting down until the beginning of the New Year and all who attend will have the most beautiful view of the Strip’s fireworks.

Clementine’s Coming Out (into the Shadows) Bash

Though the fates may dare to call the entire thing ill conceived, tonight it was little Clementine’s decision to step forth and into the world her mother left behind for her. These haunted halls should not seem so spooky with a build so modern but perhaps it is not real ghosts that linger in the halls. Or maybe it is. Regardless, you have been invited to uncover at least one of the many mysteries of the late Orator.

For those who did not know before, which was nearly all, Clementine Johnson is no Johnson at all, but rather Devlin. The dhampir daughter of the later Orator herself, the little bat is ready to at last announce herself to be what she knows she is. And what better way to christen her new mansion than to host a party that will never be forgotten?

To ring in the coming year, Clementine announces herself a Devlin and invites you to celebrate the Underground and all it’s spooky inhibitions. Only her confidants are invited to the affair, but you can rest assured news will spread rather quickly about her heritage. There will be no putting this cat back in the proverbial bag. However, I doubt she was the only secret Moira left behind. There are likely many mysteries to uncover.

But perhaps we leave that for another night and simply enjoy a moment of peace.

A TALE TOLD....

While the only snow that sticks may be up high in the mountains, to say that winter has not brought it’s shivers would be a rather foolish statement. It’s been nearly a month since the Navarro hunters were banished to wherever they may go and those taken were reunited with their families. Time heals many wounds, but, in truth, I doubt that everyone will be safe from the horrors that plague them as memories seep into sleepless nights. I do hope you and your fellows are able to enjoy the festivities this year regardless of what my haunt your heart.

The Midnight Underground exists in a strange and beautiful place - a true melting pot of ideologies and cultures. While many Unaware traditions are slowly woven in, or perhaps practiced in their entireties, the entirety of our people celebrate the Winter Solstice in some form or the other. Santa Claus’ reindeer may not pay at the roof of the little Wolves’ homes but they are far from neglected in terms of presents and family woes. You may still see a Wizard arguing politics with their family over a roasted turkey. Especially this year, where the tensions are high. Which candidate are you voting for, grandmother?

There are many things you may see looking around this frigid desert city. Of course there are the Unaware festivities: a ball drop for new years on the strip, ice skating at Downtown Summerlin, or the botanical garden at the Bellagio just to think of a few. Beneath it all, like always if you are able to open your eyes, are the stirrings of something so, so much more.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE GAME....

Much like our Halloween event, there will be many things to experience around the Midnight Underground during the Winter Solstice. However, they do not to place during one night, but rather spread throughout December 21st to December 31st. All text messages inside the discord are also able to take place throughout any of these days, though if they are plot relevant, try to make it clear which days they are happening during. The events you may experience are as follows:

Connor and Esmeray’s Winter Solstice Party: December 21st: For wolves the welcoming of the solstice is rooted in deep tradition. The Talbot’s have always taken the night to greet the sun and say thank you to the moon and her hard work. Connor has gone, in Connor fashion, and made it extra special. He claims the party will act as a house warming for him and Esme’s new home, but in secret he’s been plotting to surprise his best friend with a cake and a matching set of birthday girl sashes. **Required attendance for @chlocxli at the request of Connor who has not stopped texting you asking how close you are to the house. Sorry, my dear, I suppose he eagerly awaits your arrival.

Damian Harker’s Gingerbread Jubilee: December 24th: As with all events the Mortalis candidate chooses to host, this one will be at Pete’s Diner and be open to both the Unaware and beyond. Best keep your knowledge to yourself while making gingerbread houses and enjoying delicious cocoa. **Required attendance for @lilieths. Apparently he wishes to discuss some things both seen and heard. Damian is not a man I would tempt the fates with.

Hollis Fiala’s Poelnaran Celebration: December 25th-26th: Poelnaran is one of the most important festivities for the Fae - and they have many of them. Hollis has allowed us to breach through the veil and partake in the dancing and merriment that will be there. The event is exclusive and invite only and they ask for any non-fae in attendance to wear a mask, lest Mother Below see you and chase you away. Please remember the fae merriment can be rather extreme from those unaccustomed to it. They will be dancing until they collapse and for those not of their nature, the expectation is to dance until your feet bleed. **Required attendance for @desertsiren

Karnstein Kafe’s Holiday Hodge Podge: December 29th: Rina of Karnstein Kafe had gathered together their favorite of all human holiday traditions. There will be a white elephant, their famous fried chicken, and then a wish around the pine tree. Feel free to write out a wish you have for the coming year and tie it up on the tree. They’ll also be passing out free coffee cups. **Required attendance for @camkiskadden. You’ve found a note tucked away inside your things, unsure how it got there, but the writer requests your presence, claiming they have information on the mysterious Goodwin.

Thaddeus James’ Looking into the New Year Party: December 31st: Every year, Thaddeus James hosts a rather lavish and exciting New Years Eve Party at the top of The Strat overlooking the city. It is a black tie affair but all in the Midnight Underground are welcome to attend. He always picks someone from the crowd to do a reading for. It’s sure to be a night you’ll never forget. **Please note, there will be a special discord event for all who participate in this event. @r3m3mb3r-m3-n0t you have been given a special invitation. Best not tempt the man who you owe a debt to.

Clementine Johnson Devlin’s Coming Into the Shadows Bash: December 31st: And what is this? Friendly competition for the Power Candidate himself? It seems our darling Clementine grows tired of the light and hopes to venture out into the cold shadows with the rest of us. We welcome you with open arms, pupling, as this is your home. I assume all your friends are welcome in attendance. Did any of you know the late Orator had an offspring? Curiouser and Curiouser! **Required attendance for @noatwithstanding. Would it be any surprise that your dearest friends would like you there? They adore you as I do, fledgling.
