I don't know what has gotten into me today. Okay, no, that's a lie. I do know and I just don't even wanna begin to talk about it. I just wanna share what it brought about and hopefully you enjoy it.
The clouds overhead weren't as dark as they had been the past week, leaving the wet fields damp enough for what Dean wanted to do. He had managed to convince his dad to allow him the keys to the truck for a whole night. With the help of his mother, he had packed up the bed with more blankets and pillows than he knew what to do with. But he had plans for those. He tapped on the steering wheel in time with the music that played softly through the speakers as he waited.
The house he was parked in front of was not necessarily fancy. But the family that lived inside was far more proper than anyone else in the small town they lived in. Castiel Novak was the biggest exception to that, with his willingness to join Dean in whatever harebrained scheme he could come up with at the drop of a hat. This one was a prime example of such occurrences.
Once he climbed into the truck with a bright smile, Dean didn't waste any time, speeding towards the field he had picked out the day before for their adventure. They didn't speak the entire trip, but they didn't have to. They had been attached at the hip for so long that it came naturally to them to be around each other. There was no secrets between them anymore and whole conversations were had with simple looks, light touches and soft smiles.
Once they reached their destination, Dean turned to Cas with an evil grin and a raised eyebrow. "Are you ready?" The only answer he got was a smirk and a wink. It was all he needed.
They had gone muddin' together plenty of times but this was different. They were finally alone, Dean was trying his hardest to impress Cas with everything he had, there was nothing keeping them from just enjoying the time together once they were done. Sam wasn't there for them to worry about, finally. Everything was falling in place perfectly. It made the laughter bubble from deep down inside Cas, smile hurting his cheeks as his eyes squinted shut.
It was over faster than either of them hoped for but Dean didn't mind. He wanted to save the light for setting up his plan and he knew all the whipping had probably shifted the blankets around in the bed. He parked along a fence line, turning the truck to allow them the horizon that was slowly turning into a rainbow of colors. He unlocked the bed cover, lifting it enough to drop the tail gate. He turned to Cas, cheeks flushing as a pillow tumbled out of the mess, watching as his best friend stare in confusion.
"Dean, what's this?"
"Let me get this set up and I'll explain, I promise."
As promised, the pillows placed perfectly and the blankets wrapped around them, Dean looked at Cas with a shy smile. "I knew you would probably say no if I told you about this, so I kinda had to come up with a way to get you out here for this. But... Cas..."
This was new to Dean. Admitting how he felt and putting it into words was something he wasn't good at. Hell, he struggled with his own family and they knew him better than anyone else. Anyone but Castiel. And that was the whole point.
"Cas. You're my best friend. You know me better than anyone else in the world. You have seen every side of me and you haven't run off screaming yet. I've seen the kinda guys you look at and I know they're a million times better for you than I could ever hope for. But sometimes..." Dean sighed, closing his eyes as he rested a hand on Castiel's thigh, unable to look at his best friend. "You make me feel like I could be. Like I could be enough, smart enough, attractive enough, something more than what everyone else sees in me. And then, I feel like maybe I'll be able to do something with my life. I can be someone and I don't have to just be another junkyard dog stuck in a garage for the rest of my life."
Green eyes slowly opened, looking into blue that held an unreadable expression. He paused in his monologue, suddenly afraid of what would happen when he finished. But he couldn't stop now. Not yet.
"I feel like there's so much more to us than just friends. Maybe it's just me, I don't know. But when I'm with you, it feels like there's something there and I just can't... I had to know. Cas, will you... would you ever... I wanna be with you, Cas."
His words hung in the warm night arm, the sun setting in the distance, the sounds of the country land around them playing like music. It was all out and he could do nothing more than wait. And hope.
"You brought me out here to ask me out? You set this whole thing up so you could ask me out, under the stars, in the bed of your dad's truck, with a mountain of pillows and your mom's favorite comforters?"
Dean winced and nodded, head hanging in shame. He was a hopeless romantic when it came to things he wanted to do right by Cas and to hear his friend list them off like that made him sound so girly, it was almost painful.
"Dean. You're my best friend." Those words gave him enough hope to look up and open his eyes. "And all those other guys you think I want? They have nothing on you. You're perfect. And if you're willing to want someone like me, even when you could have anyone else, then I'm always gonna be here."
It wasn't Dean's first kiss. But it was the first time he got to kiss the person he loved, under the stars, in the middle of a field, truck covered in mud and their bodies wrapped in each other and a blanket. It was like falling in love with Cas all over again. The look of disappointment at the state of his beloved truck on John Winchester's face was worth it when he gave Dean a pat on the shoulder for finally stepping up and going after Cas before someone else did.
