SUMMARY: Brooklyn, 1924. During their rise to fame, two professional boxers at the beginning of their careers meet and begin a turbulent affair. Set to the backdrop of opulent parties, dark-lit speakeasies, and the bright spotlight of the championship ring, Dean and Cas get caught up in boxing's seedy underworld.
CHAPTER PREVIEW:
Thwack.
The sound had rattled against his windowpane. Castiel looked in that direction just in time to hear it again, to see a small blur of motion as something tiny hit against the glass.
“What?” he grumbled.
The sound came again, irritating in its persistence. Castiel gritted his teeth and thrust himself out of bed. He marched across the room, ready to tell whomever it was that they should fuck off unless the building was on fire.
However, when he ripped open the window and stuck his head out, Dean was standing on the sidewalk below. The Superior rumbled on the curb, its headlights on, illuminating him and making his shadow stretch down the street.
Castiel tensed, his breath catching. He hadn’t seen Dean in days, ever since the engagement party.
Dean grinned, his bleached teeth in the headlights hitting Castiel like a camera flash. “Finally. I was running out of gravel,” Dean called up. He smacked his hands together, and Castiel could only just make out the puff of dust raining down from between them.
Dean tipped his head back and spread out his arms. “You dreaming about me?”
A spike of pain shot up from the bolt of Castiel’s tensed jaw to his temple.
“I’m coming up!” Dean called, and he bound up the stoop before Castiel could ask why he was there.
Not that Castiel could have asked. His pulse was beating too fast in his throat, a bird in a cage, flapping its wings and thrashing against the bars to be let out.
Only one reason for Dean showing up in the middle of the night occurred to him. He forced himself not to hope for that.
Soon, a pounding knock came to his door, as if Dean assumed Castiel needed rousing again. Or perhaps his fists were too used to heavy hitting.
Bracing himself, Castiel crossed the room and unlocked the door. He expected Dean’s smile to greet him. Instead, Dean appeared anxious.
“Cas,” Dean exhaled, sounding as if he’d run all the way to Castiel’s door. His eyes widened, both relieved and beseeching. “I need you.”
Castiel’s mouth parted.
Dean continued, “There’s a fight in Queens tonight. I need you to enter it.”
At once, Castiel deflated. Although, his heart didn’t cease its pounding.
“Dean,” he said, not certain what he wanted to say next.
Dean, however, must have understood his thought process better than even Castiel did, because he said, “I’m gonna bet on you, okay? I’m short the rent again, and that party damn near cleaned me out. You can keep whatever the winnings are. I’d do it myself but, if I come home covered in bruises from something like this, Lisa would kill me.”
Castiel looked off to the side. He tried to figure out the best way to decline. Perhaps a blunt “no” would be appropriate for this situation.
“C’mon, man. If you don’t wanna do it for me or Sam, do it for her,” Dean said, likely unaware that he was making a worse case. But then Dean’s voice dropped into something too young for his body, and he asked, “Please?”
Castiel sighed, his fight leaving him—but apparently he’d have to find it again, because he was fighting tonight. “Fine,” he said, albeit reluctantly.
A wide, boyish grin spread on Dean’s face, showing his pointed canines. His eyes glinted and he slapped one palm against Castiel’s doorjam. “You’re a dream.”
Castiel wished this really was a dream, because that would mean he was getting some sleep.
When Deputy Mayor Cas Novak and homicide detective Dean Winchester spend the night together, neither of them expects to wake up to the news that the mayor has been murdered. But what happens when your alibi is someone you have to keep a secret?
