Not your ordinary
glamping, theatre trip: Austin Playhouse has a temporary home
By Cali Bock
Earlier this month, Austin Playhouse artistic director Don Toner helped dig to place temporary electrical wiring to supply the theatre with power via Austin Energy. (The shows and the climate inside previously depended on generators.) Don and his daughter Lara Toner, associate art director for Austin Playhous, are less than three months away from having the theatre's building site approved by the city in the Mueller neighborhood, the current location of the temporary setup. They've been busy generating building plans even six weeks before the city gives them the go ahead to begin fundraising for its construction. Though it may look like a tent on paper, the interior is modern, tidy glamping. Theatre patrons perch in the same plush chairs which were transferred over from their previous location at Penn Field in Austin. Although the actors have to shout, they - and attendees - don't have to sweat because inside the tent is completely climate controlled.
