These lithograph images are from the Collection de costumes civils et militaires, scènes populaires, et vues de l’Asie-Mineure made in 1836-38, which was a very transformational time for the Ottoman Empire. It features a print of Muhammad Ali Pasha, created shortly after he ousted the French from Egypt and sought to control the region as an increasingly independent agent from the Ottoman Sultan. The album features another controversial figure, Ali Pasha of Ioannina, who ruled the area around Macedonia. He came to power as a leader of brigands, later allying with the Ottomans--but even then he conducted his court in Greek and faced criticism for minimizing the power of the Sultan in the region. This album makes quite a statement as a window into the rise of local power during the 1830s and other social developments.
