Character Information CW: Child neglect mention
Five years before Mushu was born, his father was named the Chinese national dragon. All the prestige and respect came to his family. And, to their greater delight, Mushu’s older brother was born that year, in the year of the dragon. So not only was his father the national dragon, they now had someone who would be able to inherit such an honorable position if they continued to do well and respect and honor the Dragon culture.
Mushu was born on a hot summer’s day, just a few days after the Dragon Boat Festival. And from his earliest memories, he could recall that there were always expectations. He was expected to play with the right friends, and do well in school, and…oh yeah, access his Dragon side early just like his older brother. But he didn’t start showing any signs. Mushu was a cheerful young child, and then a cheerful preteen and there was nothing.
So Mushu’s father decided it was time for him to take real action on it. The Chinese National Dragon brought his second born son to the top of a mountain, to a cliff side and instructed him to fly out of there. Mushu tried everything he could think of to try to awaken his Dragon. To try to be able to fly off and back to his family where he belonged. He tried for hours. And hours. And hours. Hunger hit him, the cold of being on top of the mountain hit him, and then he felt certain that he would die up there away from everyone he knew and loved.
Then just before he passed out, his older brother flew in out of nowhere, picking him up and carrying him back home. Everything felt different then. Mushu was still alive, but he had failed. He had failed to be the second great pride of a Dragon that his parents needed him to be. He was an ordinary child of the National Dragon.
Mushu got to grow watching his brother be trained, watching his brother grow in strength and show off the Dragon skills he learned. And Mushu was “human-locked.” He was “human-locked” and not of interest to his parents. Or at least not his father. He started to grow a little desperate. He did his research and attempted to imitate what a Dragon could through alternate means. If his dad thought he had harnessed some of the Dragon, things would get better right?
Wrong.
Now he was trench deep in a lie and pulling off more complicated tricks each time he was expected to train or to show how he had grown. And then, to make it even worse, his father put him in charge of some family treasures, instructing him to guard him with his true Dragon strength. That all would have been great if he actually had that strength.
Needless to say, Mushu failed in his duty. The treasures were gone, and he brought shame and dishonor to himself and his family. He was no longer allowed to stay at home. He would have to leave. His mother finally chose the location for him, a magical town in England known as Swynlake. He was being sent off in disgrace. Now he would have to figure out college and just how to redeem his honor in a whole new country.
