Hercules sat in his small, dingy tent. He watched intently as a small, black spider scuttled across the ground, heading up the thinly veiled walls. He sighed and sat back on his lumpy bed. The springs either stuck into his back or were nonexistent entirely. He attempted to fluff up his pillow, failing miserably. The cold wind whipped through the field, slashing at the tent tops.
Familiar sounds of a horse trotting through mud filled the unnerving silence and Hercules stuck his head out the flappy entrance. A tall brown steed trodded quietly past his tent, without giving Mulligan time to analyse the man atop it. The horse stopped just past the tent, but Hercules couldn’t see it anymore. Whoever was on top slid off and their feet landed in the mud with a gross squish. The steed neighed loudly which was swiftly followed by hushing, and whispered words that Hercules couldn’t understand in his sleep delirium state.
Mud squelched beneath their boots. They got louder and louder, and were soon joined by another set of footsteps. Their shadows cast like demons into Hercules’ living situation, looming up the walls. They shook hands, and a smile that shone in the moonlight beamed on one mans face. Hercules ducked back inside when they looked over. His breathing was laboured from nervousness and he flopped down onto bed.
The flap was dragged back bit by bit, ultimately unveiling a tall, fluffy haired man. “‘Ercules?” He said in surprise. “I didn’t know you were back!”
“Lafayette!” Hercules yelled brightly, leaping up to his feet with glee.
“I had no idea you were back, amour!” Lafayette charged forward and crushed Hercules in a bear hug.
“I missed you so much!”
“I missed you too!” Lafayette pulled back, quickly pressing a chaste kiss to his lips. “Although, I do ‘ave some... unfortunate news.”
“What? Whatever it is, we’ll stay together, right?”
“After everything…I’d still choose you.” Lafayette kept their foreheads together. “After the war, I have to go back to France.”
“What!?” Hercules placed two hands on both of Lafayette’s shoulders.
“I have to fight for them, ‘Erc.” The Frenchman spoke softly.
“I’ll come with you.”
“Non, it’s too dangerous.” Lafayette stepped back.
“You’re about to throw yourself into another revolution and telling me it’s too dangerous? Laf, honey, I’m coming with you. End of.” Hercules crossed his arms determinedly.
Lafayette chuckled.
“Just stay by my side.”
