Toshio gave a start, having almost fallen asleep face-down in a sandwich. A long day in the sun had worn him out to the point where he could even doze off in the middle of a cafe that was still busy at 21:30. That was something the small island of Maui had in common with his home city of Yokohoma.... people never seemed to sleep. But while at home it was over-worked students and businessmen alike, here it was crazed tourists and their screaming children. Not that Toshio minded, for he always managed to find the less-popular places where he could truly relax. With a contented sigh he waved over the waitress, and paid by pointing at a few lines in his already dog-eared phrase book. And that was that. The sky already bright with stars and tiki torches burning low, the writer pulled out a book of poetry and began to read sweet romantic words that seemed at home in such a beautiful place. With the humid, tropical air in his lungs and the lush fauna around him, Fukawa Toshio was truly at peace.
