Saru waited by the transporter pad. It had been some time since the Discovery had been in close enough proximity to another ship for such formalities as an exchange of personnel, and he found himself unexpectedly off-balance. It was painful to realize that war had changed his duties enough to make such a simple procedure feel remarkable.
It had been even longer since he had first met Lieutenant Spock. That had been before the Vulcan’s foster sister had committed treason; before the Shenzou had fallen; before the war. It seemed like a decade had passed since, and he could summon little about the man to memory.
Nor was he entirely comfortable having another aboard their ship, in the same way he was not fully comfortable with the look that Captain Lorca had when he'd closed the channel with Captain Pike and sent his first officer to greet their visitor. Still, as Spock materialized, he held his hands carefully to his sides and hid any discomfort. "Lieutenant Spock," Saru greeted him. "Welcome aboard the Discovery."
