2 years, 6 months and 12 days ago I was diagnosed with Stage IVB Rare Metastatic Cancer. Everyone at the hospital didn’t believe I’d survive. I was numb when the surgeons told me to “go home and do what makes you happy”. Giving up was not an option for me. I’ve fought hard and I’ve cried many many tears. I know I still have a long way to go to be able to function independently but I’m so grateful to still be living. I never doubted Gods plan. It’s been a long hard fight, I’ve had several major surgeries with multiple organs removed, my kidneys and colon both stopped working, but I completely trust God. I had to learn how to walk and eat again. This has been the biggest battle of my life this far. I pray all day everyday. Client Case #1: Battling Multiple Surgeries and Excess Weight

Case Topic: Had multiple surgeries and trying to safely lose weight, while managing inflammation and preventing further injury.  

Following multiple surgeries and with trying to better manage weight can be quite challenging. Many will diet and exercise while simultaneously depriving the body of good nutrition, which is a key factor in successful weight loss and for managing inflammation. My first suggestion is to work with your physician on ways to safely engage in exercise following your previous injuries and surgeries. Determine which types of activities will be most effective for you. Some suggestions to ask about include swimming or riding a recumbent bike, which are both lower in impact.

 Depending on your physician’s recommendations, focusing on your diet might be the most effective weight management tool. Focusing on 5-6 small meals per day, abundant with nutrition-dense foods will provide ample calories, without overdoing it. Focus on foods that work to fight inflammation, such as:

 o   Colorful fruits and vegetables:  berries, cherries, oranges, papaya, pineapple, tomatoes, peppers (especially hot peppers), and green leafy vegetables (such as collard greens, spinach, chard, and kale)

o   Oils:  olive oil, flax oil, sesame oil, almond oil, avocado oil, macadamia nut oil, and fish oil

o   Nuts and seeds:  almonds, walnuts, pecans, macadamia nuts, sesame seeds, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds

o   Fatty fish: sardines, mackerel, and salmon
