I simultaneously love The West Wing and yet also realise it's full of neoliberal holes and propoganda.
Yet the episode that has stuck with me the most is their 9/11 special episode, "Abraham and Ishmael", where a group of students are talking with the senior staff during an emergency lockdown.
Toby Ziegler, a New York jew, talks about multipluralism in our society, that we as a modern and democratic people, have put stock into the fact that there are multiple ways to live your truth, to function within society and experience the freedom of worship and love and creativity.
But what you don't get to do is preach intolerance. The foundations of our society, built on that idea, will crumble when the people who undermine it can only hold a singular existential truth to be viable, rather than that multitude.
And I think about that a lot, when it comes to "do no harm, take no shit" and "tolerant societies don't tolerate intolerance". That the people who want to tear down the fact that there are multiple truths are the people whose truth is wrong.
