Greyson pulled his scarf tighter around his neck, throwing a prudent glance at the detective beside him. “You know, I thought this sort of thing was against your principles. Sneaking into buildings at night without a warrant, mean.”
Watts gave him a sidelong glance, his expression impassive but his eyes betraying a flicker of amusement. “My principles, Mr. Greyson, are flexible when the pursuit of justice necessitates it.” He decided to skip mentioning the time Joseph caught Crabtree and him trying to break into one of the campus’ bedrooms during a previous case. “Besides, you’re the one with the keys.”
“Ah, yes,” Greyson muttered, his hand wrapping around the ring of keys from his coat pocket. “The perks of being a glorified watchman.”

The only sound was the crunch of their boots sinking into the snow as Kim and Kevin walked side by side along the edge of the park. The search for evidence had brought them out of the warm interiors of their car, and Kim regretted every life choice that had led her to underestimate Chicago’s brutal winter that same morning. She wrapped her arms tighter around herself, her breath becoming white clouds in front of her face when she reached out.
“You look like a popsicle,” Kevin said, glancing at her.
“I’m fine,” Kim replied through a forced smile hiding her chattering teeth, clearly anything but fine.
Kevin gave her a knowing look. Without hesitation, he started shrugging off his coat.
“Don’t even think about it,” she told him in a serious tone, stopping in her tracks to shoot him a glare.
“Oh, I’m thinking about it.” He placed his coat over her shoulders before she could wriggle away.
