I’ve been tossing around the possibilities of Grace having a sister and whether or not said sister committed suicide for a while now. The Mentalist drops hints of something darker in Grace’s past, but it never expands on it and, for the most part, her backstory seems to be forgotten.
In one episode, she (very passionately) talks a woman out of suicide by telling her about her own sister’s suicide. Yet in the same episode, she says she made the story up on the spot and Rigsby says he never read anything about a sister in her file. BUT in another episode, Jane deduces that she has a painful secret she’s never told anyone and... the matter is dropped entirely, never to be spoken about again???
So I’ve been thinking, what if she did have a sister, but that sister was illegitimate. Her father, being an evidently religious man, would be ashamed of his mistake and try to keep Grace’s half-sister a secret. Grace could still know about her and they could be as close as full sisters, but I don’t think that her sister would appear on her file, considering they aren’t full-blood related and the whole secrecy thing. That would also account for why Grace denied having one, but was still able to make such a teary-eyed speech that felt so real.
I dunno. It satisfies me, anyway. I wouldn’t be so attached to the idea if I hadn’t already interacted with a Laura. I loved their sister antics and banter and aaaa I can’t let that headcanon go now.
