Arthur was hungry.
Starving, actually. It’s been a month since he’s eaten. It wasn’t an intentional thing, the opportunity had simply never presented itself; all the possible food he could find was already claimed or didn't seem particularly appetizing. He supposed he wasn’t exactly in the position to reject food, but he was a fickle creature, and no matter how hungry he found himself, he could never seem to bring himself to choke down anything less than mouthwatering. It was going to be the death of him someday. Hunger pains clawed and coiled in his stomach, each heartbeat pulsing with pain. He hadn’t bothered to drink either, with his empty stomach each gulp of cold water felt like ice settling in the empty well of his stomach.
Rustling and chatter, footsteps, people were coming; food. He sunk low in the underbrush, waiting for the main clump of people to pass bye, keen eyes looking for anyone unlucky enough to lag behind and become his dinner. Soon his eyes settled on two youths, just recently grown. They would be tender. They didn’t seem to be bothered by their slow pace, they were foolishly comfortable in their wild surroundings. Arthur trailed along as they drew farther and farther away from the main group. Arthur couldn’t hear the clump of people’s chatter any longer, which means that they couldn’t hear him or his prey.
He wiped his tail around, tripping the two. One yelped, falling back on her arms to cushion her fall, the other was caught off guard, hitting the ground hard and laying there, stunned. Arthur couldn’t help but relish in their fear as he crept into their sight. He knew his kind was terrifying, which was pretty helpful when hunting. He darted forward, snapping his tail around one girl, crushing her with all the strength he could, knocking her unconscious before biting into her neck, letting his poison do its work. The girl would be dead in a few minutes. The other tried to crawl away, screaming for help that would not come. The group was far beyond earshot, and nowhere in sight.
She got up, taking a shoe off and throwing it full force at his face. It stung, but he didn’t really care. most prey froze in place and started crying, fighters were amusing.
“What the fuck! What the fuck are you oh my fucking god!” The girl shrieked, waving her other shoes in warning. “I’ve killed snakes before! Don’t think I won’t do it again! Y-your just a bigger snake…” She looked around desperately, eyes darting around in vain, looking for an escape. Arthur let out something close to a chuckle but sounded more like a hiss. She started to sprint away.
Arthur let his head fall to the side, irritated. He would have to chase her now. Maybe he could just scare her to the general direction of his nest? He could try. He picked up his kill, moving quickly in the direction his prey ran off. A few snapping branches and ominous hisses were all he needed to lead the terrified girl to his nest. He wipped his tail around, capturing the screaming girl, leaving her pinned under the weight of his tail.
“Fuck you!” The tiny thing seemed fond of those words. Arthur quickly swallowed down his initial kill, growling happily, feeling full for the first time in a while. Unfortunately, he didn’t know what to do with his other capture. He was far too full right now, and if he killed the thing now it would be gross and rotten by the time he needed to eat again. He looked down at the flailing and crying thing. He supposed he could keep them around, a little pet and insurance should he be unable to find a meal for a while. Besides, they were too cute to eat, at least right now. He could wait. He remembered his friend having kept one of these for a long time, said they were handy when heats hit and they lasted a while.
He squeezed around the small woman’s body until she passed out. He curled up, tail draped over her. He doubted she would be able to move away once she awoke.
