relief had washed over him when isa had agreed to meet once again with him, jakurai taking the day off from his volunteering work to instead make his way to small coffee shop isa had suggested. it was tucked out of sight of the main road; hidden behind a larger more commercial section of cotes, but a charming place nonetheless. not too difficult to find, for which the doctor was grateful for. just from standing outside, it was clear that it was a small venue. there only seemed to be a few tables inside with the rest of the place made up of local artwork and pottery, the small kitchen at the back with a minimal amount of cakes on display. still, it looked quaint. something you would expect to find on an island as creative as this. 

he caught sight of blue hair through the window and thus jakurai made his way inside, pushing the door open to be greeted by the sound of the radio from within. the smell of warm coffee, of freshly cooked soup + various fruity teas all wafted his way as he walked over to where isa was sitting and took the dining chair opposing him. “ good afternoon. “ he said, a smile easily coming to his features as he regarded the other. in the daylight, there was so much more to see. the details to isa’s face which had been masked by the darkness, to his skin and to his expression. “ thank you for recommending this place; it looks lovely ! “

jakurai’s jacket hung over the back of his chair. his plainclothes were simple, mostly black as he tended to style himself back home this way too. some sense of normality which he clung to. a waitress came over and scribbled down his order of a herbal tea and a toasted sandwich, leaving isa to then decide on his own order afterwards. after the woman had left, jakurai sighed. not in a tired, exhausted way although he was somewhat fatigued, but in a content and happy sort of way, relaxing as he addressed the other. “ how have you been then, isa? anything unusual happen recently? i’ve heard that can be quite common here, at least so my patients tell me ! “ ♬ ¦ starter for @munraizu​

              He does not LIKE HER.  It seems silly, somehow --- petulant to think of it like that.  Can they truly like or dislike anything?  And yet it is clear in his empty eyes and his cavernous words and the single syllables that make up words like IT and THING.  And she, in turn --- fears him?  Is that what it is?  She is small, and young, and over - curious as to the bond he and one of her BEST FRIENDS share, but primarily she thinks she is afraid.  Or something like it.

                       “Uh --- I.  Finished my mission report.”  A tad halting.  A tad unsure.  ( granted, that may not be the fear.  she is so new to this world that conversing proves a challenge at times. )  “Thank you ------- for letting Axel be my partner on the mission, I mean.”  It may not always be he who creates their missions, but it is he who relays them.  That is enough.

each part of the island held the potential to pique his interest truly, jakurai finding himself ever the more curious as to the island’s way of working with each passing moment he spent upon it. from the scenic beauty of the cotes ward, to the ward he stood in now labelled as ‘ archimedes ‘, every newly discovered location saw the doctor’s attention stolen away yet again, as he sought to unravel its mysteries as he came to grapple with his understanding of his placement in this world.

a practical man of science, but with an emotional inner self whose drive to uncover the truth + a passion to aid whomever whenever he was able, it was natural that he followed the flow of people along the streetlamp-lit walkway, guided by the chattering of strangers as they basked in the cool night air. there seemed an absence of danger, especially as people filtered into the streets where the theatre’s boulevard began, a sense of peace residing across the entire division.

as the crowds thinned, jakurai realised he had ventured into the star trail; a lengthy street filled with lights + sound. despite the abundance of glowing lamps and hanging bulbs, the sky above was not at all masked or hidden, instead allowing a clear view of every twinkling star above, residing seemingly so far away and above the unfamiliar world. a small area of grass resided some ways beyond the stalls, and jakurai was drawn there automatically, the darkness of the area allowing for a much better view of the night sky above.

a lone bench sat overlooking the greenery, and upon it sat a single figure, eyes pointed skyward. jakurai hesitated before approaching, wanting the chance to sit and enjoy the view, but not truly wishing to disturb a stranger deep in thought.

a vendor pushing along a wheeled cart happened to be passing by at that moment before the bench, causing jakurai to become inspired for a moment with something of an idea. “ excuse me, miss. “ the cart paused a little before the bench, with jakurai quickly catching up. “ could i trouble you for a cup of coffee? “ he asked, a soft smile to accompany it. he then gestured to the stranger sat at the bench, brilliant blue eyes connecting with those of the man’s own sea foam green. “ can i offer you anything as well? it’s quite a cold evening after all, but please feel free to decline, if you would rather not. “  ♬ ¦ starter for @lunadriven

POETRY SENTENCE MEME

⇾ “ karma has a way of working and doing its due diligence ” asked by @munraizu

there was always a certain wisdom behind much of what isa said, as if he spoke not in some parroted, faux-learned way, but from experience and awareness. some depth to his words, as he spoke his piece and allowed a pause to drink. jakurai was transfixed somewhat, glancing aside if only to watch raindrops chasing each other down the soaked window of the café. if karma was real, it would both answer so many questions but also raise some in their stead. perhaps it was a long game to play, one that could take a lifetime, but there was no denying there were those he would have liked to have seen pay for the misfortune they cast.

“ you think so? “ his gaze shifted back, rolling over the way isa’s arms were folded against his chest, travelling upward till they met eye to eye once more. “ it does tend to happen, doesn’t it? if someone does something awful, usually they find some form of punishment eventually. “ he scratched at his cheek gently with the tip of his finger. “ but unfortunately, it doesn’t always seem to work. too many people abuse their positions, take advantage of their role. some people do terrible things and simply live with them. i cannot imagine it, myself. “ or can he?

“ perhaps all that means is that karma sometimes might require... a little push. “ he took a sip from his own drink, steam warming his face as he eyed isa with a look he hoped he needn’t elaborate on, a knowing sharpness to his gaze which translated without verbal explanation.

FLUSTERED SENTENCE MEME

his eyes widened in surprise as the other man chuckled, jakurai paused for a moment in a stunned silence. there were still so many things he was not entirely accustomed with, as well as things that perhaps were far better known amongst the younger population of the island, but was he truly so out of touch with jokes that he might not catch the sarcastic quip of isa’s jest at all? a warm scarlet blossomed beneath his eyes and he quickly glanced aside, a hand coming to shield himself somewhat from the embarrassment of clearly so silly a question.

“ ah, i think i understand now. “ he said so with a laugh of his own; a collected chuckle as he fought off the burn of his face. “ i assure you i’m not nearly as old as that question made me to sound. “ a poor attempt to make himself sound less like an old man, really. it had felt like a simple question, a request for explanation into some of the local lingo which clearly was used by the more youthful islanders. he wasn’t truly that old at all, but times such of those... well, he still had yet to meet isa’s gaze from his shame. 

“ how cruel of you... “ he chuckled once more, the heat in his face finally fading though once his hand moved isa might still have been able to spy the spread of rosy-tinted embarrassment.

SEND ‘☔️’ FOR OUR MUSES TO TAKE SHELTER UNDERNEATH AN UMBRELLA TOGETHER

from seemingly nowhere the skies had opened and the heavens unleashed a heavy flood of rain. once blue, the world above was now a thick mass of grey with the occasional spark of bright lightning illuminating the horizon. fortunately, jakurai had been well prepared. he’d long since purchased a long, practical umbrella with a curved handle, which he then clung to as the rain came clattering about the pavements around him. droplets rolled down the open shelter, before joining the puddles below as the doctor continued his walk through one of the spirale parks. 

he might not have noticed the familiar streak of blue suddenly dashing past him, had he not looked up in that exact moment at the sound of wet footsteps running through the downpour caught his ear. as the figure slowed to catch their breath, jakurai called out as loud as he could, just about audible over the rain. “ isa ! “  he quickly caught up, his umbrella shielding the other from getting soaked any further. 

from the looks of him, he was already quite damp, hair clinging to his forehead and his jacket a much darker shade than perhaps it usually was. droplets almost akin to tears were clinging to his eyelashes, before running streams down his cheeks as he looked up to meet jakurai’s gaze. “ oh dear, one moment. “ even in the warmer weather, getting soaked to the skin could still very well lead to a cold. he withdrew a fresh tissue from his pocket and offered a sympathetic dab to his forehead, before just handing over the scented tissue regardless. 

“ why don’t we walk together? there’s not much we can do about your clothes right now, but at least i can prevent you from getting any damper. “ his stature indeed allowed for them to walk side by side, with jakurai’s umbrella sheltering them both, as they continued through the puddle-littered gardens.
