Ireland sketches, Vol 3. A little high, a little low.
We stayed 2 nights in the tidy town of Bantry, enjoying sea food and friendly people. And we took a day trip to Sheep’s Head peninsula, where we originally planned to hike most of our trip.
It would have been a rocky, desolate hike but not too difficult. There are clearly marked and well worn paths. Making it out to the lighthouse at the end of Sheep’s Head felt like an accomplishment and it looked to me like I had reached the edge of the world.
On our way to the Sheep’s Head lighthouse we stopped in Kilcrohane at the post office and general store. The post offices in the little Irish towns usually double as a general stores and this one gave us a surprising glimpse of local flavor. The owner and post master asked us if we wanted Donald Trump stamps and, thinking he was joking, we tried to dismiss the 45th President of the United States. He persisted and we realized we had misread his sentiments. He was a Donald Trump supporter. Big time. You can see my version of the encounter in the above comic.
On previous trips I drew a lot more of those kinds of sketches as a kind of travel log. For this Ireland trip my decision to use watercolor to enhance my pen sketches pushed me to more artistic compositions. In the future I hope to balance the site sketching more with comic travel journalling. A little high, a little low.
