LinkedIn was founded in December 2002 by Reid Hoffman, Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke, Eric Ly, and Jean-Luc Vaillant. Reid Hoffman had previously worked at PayPal and was interested in creating a professional networking site that would help people connect with each other for business purposes. The initial idea for LinkedIn was to create an online version of a Rolodex, a tool used to organize business contacts. The founders wanted to create a platform that would allow people to easily find and connect with professionals in their industry or field. In May 2003, LinkedIn officially launched and quickly gained popularity among professionals looking to network and find job opportunities. The site continued to grow, adding new features such as the ability to post job listings and join professional groups. In 2016, Microsoft acquired LinkedIn for $26.2 billion, making it the largest acquisition in Microsoft's history.
