Hi new followers!

FOR THE RECORD to anyone who attended Sermon of the Signless, I apologize if the random Katniss cosplayer yelled at you in line before the panel.
SHE WAS IN NO WAY AFFILIATED WITH US and I wanted to run down the line and apologize to every single one of you in the line that she yelled at. If I hadn't been busy trying to make sure we were all organized, I would have asked con security to ask her to leave you guys alone and STOP YELLING over Alex and the other helpers.
She was NOT a part of Sermon cast, nor one of our line helpers. She did NOT have our permission to organize the line, so I really apologize if she was rude to you in any way. D:
Thank you to every single person who came to see Sermon, thank you for watching our mini-panel, thank you from the bottom of my heart. It was our first ever attempt at a scripted panel and it was a rough road to get there.
"Wow, I love your cosplay, what is it from?"
"Oh, I'm (this character) from Homestuck!"
"Oh. That's a shame."
Ok well you liked my cosplay five seconds ago.
Telling the Public About Homestuck: Fandom Public Relations 101
So I feel a need to make this post, because more often than not, if you are at a meetup, or in cosplay, or in any way dressed up in a public place, strangers may approach you and ask what it's all about. Usually they do not mean any harm! They're just curious! Sometimes they will be aware of cosplay and internet culture, but more often than not, they have no idea, and just want to know who all of the people with the weird shirts are!
When speaking to a stranger about your fandom, not just Homestuck, it is important to realize that YOU are currently their first impression of the fandom. What YOU DO and say RIGHT THEN AND THERE is going to be entirely what they take away from their first experience with Homestucks. You have the chance to introduce them to something they've never heard about or experienced before, and hey, maybe they'll look it up later, or tell their friends. However, if you are rude, obnoxious, or loud, they are probably not going to think very highly of you, or the entire rest of the fandom, for that matter.
DO:
Use common English, or whatever language for where you happen to be.
Explain in terms that someone who has NEVER HEARD OF HOMESTUCK can understand.(Don't use words like "troll," "hemospectrum," etc.)
Explain that you're a gathering of fans and enthusiasts who are meeting up to celebrate that you all have a passion for the same webcomic.
Explain what the occasion is. Halloween party, Valentine's Party, etc. For 4/13 I tell people that it is "The Anniversary of a popular internet webcomic, and today we've come out to celebrate with our fellow fans."
Tell them where to find and read the comic, mspaintadventures.com.
Be very polite!
Answer any questions they may have about what you are dressed as or what you are doing.
Thank them if they compliment your outfits.
EXAMPLE OF A GOOD EXPLANATION AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN ASKED WHY YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE DRESSED UP:
"Today we're out here because it is the fourth anniversary of a popular webcomic on the internet called Homestuck. A lot of us are out here to celebrate and meet other fans. Some of us are dressed up as the characters, we wear the outfits as sort of a hobby."
"So what are the horns and shirts for?" "Well, some of the characters are aliens, and they're based on various zodiac symbols. So all of the people wearing the horns are dressed up as aliens, and they wear their symbols on their shirts."
Easy, right?
Now, DO NOT; I REPEAT: DO NOT:
Be rude or loud.
Ask them "where they've been"
Use internet or fandom slang.
Use fandom in-jokes.
Use words from the comic that a normal person would not understand, such as "hemospectrum" or "sylladex."
Be in-character.
Respond to them as if you're the character.
Proposition them with buckets or even BRING UP buckets.
Yell at them.
SAY OR YELL "LET ME/US TELL YOU ABOUT HOMESTUCK" SERIOUSLY I AM BEGGING YOU DO NOT DO IT DON'T SAY IT IT'S NOT FUNNY OR CUTE IT'S RUDE AND CONFUSES PEOPLE AND IS GENERALLY JUST NOT OK TO YELL AT STRANGERS PLEASE DO NOT DO IT JUST DON'T.
Thank you for reading, and good luck talking to the non-Homestucks of the world. Go out there and tell them about Homestuck while being the civilized human beings you are!
Hi tumblr. Here are some things I'd like to remind you about.
(Inspired by the ladies of tumblr are super hot post. Because it was full of truthful truthiness.)
If you are a member of a fandom, GREAT! That means you love a thing! Other people love things too! That is A-okay! That's cool! You're awesome, your blog is awesome! Let's run over a list of things that are awesome:
You. You and all of your fandoms are totally awesome.
Your followers! They like your brand of awesome, and that's really awesome!
The people you follow. They post the super awesome stuff that makes your dashboard super awesome. If they start posting stuff that isn't your type of awesome, it's okay to unfollow them. It doesn't make them any less awesome. And the same goes for you too! If someone wants to stop following you, maybe your style of awesome doesn't appeal to them, and that is A-OKAY!
Your fandoms. Yo. Yeah. Legit. Even if you don't like ANY of the stuff that I'm into, that's fine! My type of awesome isn't your type of awesome, and that doesn't make it any less great!
Contributing to your fandoms! Making art, cosplay, music, writing, roleplaying, whatever it is, Even if YOU don't think you're that great at it, refer to bullet one!
Okay, we cool? Now let's run over a list of things that AREN'T awesome.
Hating on someone else's fandoms.
Hating on someone else for BEING in a fandom.
Hating on someone else for NOT being in a fandom.
Hating on someone's contributions to their fandoms.
Generalizing people in a fandom based upon your interactions with a few fans and being rude to them because of it.
Hating on someone else who isn't in your fandom.
Hating on someone else because you think your fandom is "superior."
HEY GUESS WHAT, HOW ABOUT HATING ON PEOPLE IN GENERAL AND BEING RUDE TO THEM IS JUST NOT AWESOME AT ALL?
That is all. Thank you.
Hey guys, thanks for all the asks! I'm going to bed because wow it's three hours later than I had planned to stay up.
But this was great! I'll get through the answers I didn't get to as soon as I can (this weekend sometime probably) and I'll be posting them all on askbluehoodkid! If you have any more IC questions for John, just drop them either in the askbox here or there, and I'll get to them!
Good night and I'll see you all on the flip side!
On Saturday of Momocon after the panel, I was wandering around as Kankri trying to cool off because the panel room had been 984673598675473945756 ZILLION degrees (plus I was sitting in there in a sweater so YEAH) this Mama D walked up to me and told me that no matter what, a mother is still a mother, and a son is still a son AND I ALMOST BROKE DOWN LIKE CLUNG TO HER SOBBING OH MY GOSH
Yo! On the topic of Violence towards Cosplayers!
We already know that it's NOT OKAY, but if you witness an assault at a convention, please, please, please, call the police. Do not retaliate by "fighting back," do not threaten or attack the attacker.
Separate the parties, use a human wall if you must, to keep the attacker away from the cosplayer, and check to see if the cosplayer is injured. If they are injured and the police have been called, ask them three times if they want to seek medical attention. Are their belongings intact? Their clothes? Was anyone else hurt? If there are injuries visible, take photos of them.
Everyone who was there to actually witness the event, keep them around, in the case that the officer needs them to write a statement attesting to what happened. If the attacker runs, try to keep them there, but DO NOT threaten or attack them. If they do, be sure to get a good look at their face, what they're wearing, and a description of them. Submit their description to the con security and the police.
Edit: Also, if you witness an assault at a convention, videotape as much as you can. Pretty much everyone at a con has a camera, even if it's just a camera phone. Get it on film.
