prepping for yet another charity event, at the behest of Kang Gaya, she fastens on a glittering necklace, and gives her make-up one last glance-over in the mirror.
she tries to keep her face clean. never garish or bold. she's afraid if the wealthy look at her too hard, they'll see right through her, and get a glimpse of her younger self. a little girl who grew up poor, in a small messy apartment. she hears her mother's voice in the back of her head, reminding her her LOOKS were their only ticket out of here. but she can't look like she's trying too hard, either. she wonders if the shade of lip stain she's wearing is too dark, until the sound of Minwoo emerging from the closet in his party-fit draws her from the unhappy thoughts.
as she looks at the handsome man with a smile, she brushes off her mother's nagging, and the way her mother would run the hairbrush through Yoona's long locks too hard, caring nothing about how it hurt her— only how it LOOKED...
Minwoo wasn't like the others. such a shallow pursuit seemed beneath him, or something ... it was like he didn't even care what she wore, or how she did her hair. she couldn't describe it! but she just knew: he wasn't like the other guys. he didn't date her only for her looks, and what she could physically provide...
she hurried over to him with light steps, helping him into his coat. " guess who else will be there tonight, Woo-woo ? " she titters excitedly. " the devil woman! " she giggles, referring to her boss. OF COURSE, she'd never have the gall to repeat that nickname in front of her bosses' faces. but she'd complained about Quinn and her bossy, my-way-or-the-highway, craziness many times on a after-work call to Minwoo. and he'd been such a good listener: so supportive of her work woes!! the perfect boyfriend...
and when he went to charity gala's like these, he never bickered or started fights with the other donors. " ... and Taiyang... " she adds, no longer a giggle in her voice. yes, Minwoo heard his share of complaining about him, too; the bosses' cold disregard of her, like she was nothing more than a boring little mouse compared to his cat Queen ... she leaves out the fact that she had tried so hard to get his attention before, making his dismissive attitude all the more cruel... because THAT WAS BEFORE SHE MET HER MINWOO! Minwoo always made her feel like other men had been BLIND, not to notice her. he was truly a good man...
. . . which was why her excitement about showing Minwoo off to her bullies began to fade.
eventually, he would probably pick up on the secret-that's-not-really-a-secret about her employers: Black Fang. it was well-known to many that Taiyang and Quinn were involved in some shady business, but technically, the allegations remained unproven, and therefore it was only talked about in whispers, and in gossip, in private ... and she had never actually addressed the rumors ( and how TRUE they were ) with him.
and what if he thought differently of her? disapproved ? could she leave the gang, if Minwoo asked her to... ? should she pretend she didn't KNOW— that she, too, hadn't sworn herself to the cause, for them? WHAT IF HE ASKED WHY? and if he found her out, would he then hate her, for LYING to him about herself... ? she was hiding so much of herself from him...
she was adjusting Minwoo's tie (though it was perfectly in place, and didn't need any adjusting) when her brows furrowed, and she lay her palms against his chest. " . . . Minwoo. I have to tell you something about me. " her voice was a fearful whisper. but if you love someone, you shouldn't lie.
