So, the other day, I started thinking about the “Leader/Underdog” dynamic that Cavendish and Dakota give off a little in their first appearances, in particular in “Family Vacation” and “The Substitute”. And it got me thinking about “Murphy’s Lard” and how, in this episode, they actually don’t really have this dynamic ? And like, I’m sure tons of people already noticed but since I like rambling for no reason ; about their interactions in this episode :
- When they first arrive, Cavendish does most of the talking as usual but Dakota also chimes in and Cav doesn’t say anything about it. Even when Dakota says something stupid with the flying pig, Cavendish actually agrees with him on the possibility.
- When Cav is building the shield around the cart and asks Dak for help, Dakota makes it very clear that he couldn’t care less about helping. And while Cav looks pissed off about it, he doesn’t insist. It’s also worth noticing that Cavendish doesn’t order Dakota to help. He asks and even says please, albeit in a frustrated passive-aggressive tone. And when the boulder arrives, Dakota is the one to give orders and Cav doesn’t really complain about it.
- After that, Dakota deadpans the fact that he wants to go home and, when Cavendish says no by reminding him of their mission, Dak goes back to playing music instead of helping and Cav doesn’t protest him.
- After the flying pig moment, Cav tells Dak to remove the shield, in what can be considered an orderly manner, though pretty gentle compared to earlier. And when Dakota replies without thinking but then catches himself and gets confused, Cavendish has no issue repeating himself gently using different words.
- Not much to say about the “Dakota. Play me out.”, moment. They’re both bewildered and Cav reacts with frustration to the situation. Though it is worth noticing that Cav straight up asks Dak to play music for him, thing that Dakota was doing earlier and that Cavendish was showing frustration over.
Another thing that I would like to point out, this time in “The Doctor Zone Files” because I remember someone mentioning how, when we first watch the episode, we get the impression that Cavendish is the smart one while Dakota is the dumb one. But honestly, looking back at their first appearance, Cavendish :
- Corrects Sara over a word she said correctly
- When Dak points it out, Cav replies by telling him not to talk to the customers, which Dakota wasn’t doing
- When Dakota points this out as well, Cav chooses to turn it into a dumb argument instead of accepting he was wrong
- When the cart explodes, he blames Dakota for no reason
Like, Cavendish was a dumbass since day one (and we love him for it).
