My team mate for the last two seasons of racing is Murray Hambro. He’s a below knee double amputee and I’ve known him a while. Whilst I always used to appreciate what he achieves it wasn’t until I had to edit this footage that we shot last season that I REALLY appreciated what he does. This is a single quick (ish) lap of Donington Park last season. He goes a lot quicker around there but this was on a trackday and he was just warming up. You can see how hard he has to work to get the bike around using his upper body. His prosthetic legs are held on the pegs using a couple of studs into the bottom of his boots but he cannot weight the pegs like a normal rider. 

I’ve ridden his modified Ducati 899 around Donington too and believe me it was hard work for me and I’m able bodied.

Riding Legless

#912 Ducati 899, Cadwell Park 2016. You can just see the Cliktronic piston down by the rear shock and buttons on the clip-on that the rider, Murray Hambro uses to change gear. He’s a double, below the knee, amputee who races at the British Superbikes in the Tri-options cup support race series. He’s also my team mate. I have ridden his bike so I know roughly what it takes for him to hustle his machine around at the pace he does. Put it this way, he may have no legs but his arms are like Popeye as they do the bulk of the work.

True Heroes Racing Set For Expansion

With the 2013 season over, the True Heroes Racing squad are excited to announce their 2014 rider line up of Murray Hambro and Luke Smith who will compete in the Triumph Triple Challenge with backing once again from Triumph dealer, Laguna Motorcycles of Kent.

Luke Smith, meanwhile, joins the squad for the 2014 campaign as the team expands to two riders. Unlike Murray, Luke hasn’t been seriously injured however will soon be medically discharged from the British Army after suffering severe hearing loss.

True Heroes Racing made up of injured service personnel had a great first full competitive racing season in the Triumph Triple Challenge gaining knowledge and experience with rider Murray Hambro. However team manager Phil Spencer was pleased to announce at the Motorcycle Live show today that the team will be offering up the opportunity for more injured service personnel to join the team as they are set to expand.

Lance Corporal Murray Hambro said: “I’m really looking forward to my second season in the Triumph Triple Challenge. 2013 was always our development season, allowing me to adjust to the new bike and learn some of the race circuits I’d never ridden before. For 2014 I’m hoping to continue to develop and begin to compete with other riders in the Cup competition, and having Luke on board as a second rider can only assist me with this and also achieve what we set out to do offering more opportunities for injured Service personnel to get involved with the team.”

Luke Smith commented: “After a couple of part seasons competing at a club level, in amongst deployments to Afghanistan, I’m delighted to be offered the opportunity of riding alongside Murray for True Heroes Racing. I still can’t believe Phil has offered me this opportunity to compete within the BSB paddock and it’s really given me a new focus as I look towards my imminent medical discharge from the Army.”

Team manager Phil Spencer added: “The 2014 season is looking really promising for True Heroes Racing. The support Murray and the whole team received last season was overwhelming and has re-affirmed the British public’s support for our injured Service personnel in whatever they do. To be able to expand the team and run Luke alongside Murray is brilliant and we are grateful to our sponsors for their continued support, enabling us to achieve this. Having 2 riders in the same championship, on the same bikes, on track together can only help both riders to develop faster and the technical experience Luke has gained already working for a variety of teams within the BSB paddock will also help us to develop the skills of our injured technicians, who ably support our injured riders.”
