Watching the flames dance and crackle within the fireplace had you almost completely mesmerized. The day was at its end, and the night was easing by quietly. Movement from your side had recaptured your attention away from the flickering firelight.
Murtagh returned from putting two glasses away. He sat even closer to you on the couch than he had previously.
Just as he was getting settled, you leaned into him. It was just another way of showing just how comfortable you were with him. It was not as if it were the first time either.
When you looked over, he smiled, kissing the top of your head. Even then, his smile did not fade in the slightest.
“What is it?”
There was a pause as Murtagh’s eyes settled on yours, making sure to have complete eye contact with you before he spoke. His grey eyes were not piercing, but soft and gentle, containing all of his emotions that may have been straining against his hold to conceal them for a moment longer.
His voice was low, and only shook at the first word. “I love you.”
Staring at each other for a little while, you watched as his breathing became more controlled than involuntary and his eyes increasingly searched yours the longer you remained silent.
However, you were not silent purposefully. There was a comforting warmth that spread over you like a relaxing bath. You repeated his words in your mind a number of times before you had to snap yourself back into the present.
You smiled, head tilting in adoration, “Murtagh…”
“I swear it,” he reconfirmed quickly, his hand giving yours a squeeze. His eyes appeared to plead to you. “I do love you.”
“I didn’t say you don’t,” you whispered, nudging the tip of your nose to his.
He reciprocated the small gesture, his eyes becoming heavily lidded. His exhale shook out of his body in relief and brushed over your face.
“If it’s any consolation…I love you too.”
He pulled you closer, until your bodies could feel the other’s heartbeat.
“I didn’t want to say it too soon,” you admitted, freeing your arm from between you both to tangle your fingers into his hair. “I thought—it was silly…I thought my saying so might scare you away.”
“Never,” he spoke with a soft sincerity in his voice. Then, he pressed his lips to yours.
After a short while, you were about to deepen the kiss when two distinctly happy trumpeting from your dragons reverberated into the house. Initially, you jumped in place and instinctually clung onto Murtagh before the realization had you starting to laugh.
“Well, I’m glad they’re happy.”
“So am I,” Murtagh smiled, pressing his lips to yours again.
