how much longer does D have in his pregnancy? will the babies be smaller than the twins were cuz they're full shark-person;or bigger because D is huge?
Thanks for the question <3
He’s a little more than halfway there. Gestation is usually six months, and I think it’s been about three and a half since he became pregnant.
They are going to be very smol. Probably around a pound and a half - two pounds, which is about half the size that the twins were.
My logic here is kind of like
First of all I like the idea of tiny superprecocial babies just because.
But a lot of my thinking there came from thinking about octopuses, which are considered to be hyper-intelligent but who, unlike most highly intelligent smalls and birds, receive no parental care or social education. They’re born with a set of instincts that give them the best possible shot at surviving, plus bright minds that allow them to come up with creative solutions for the kinds of problems instinct couldn’t anticipate, but because there is no cultural transmission between generations that intelligence never has the opportunity to build into a body of social knowledge.
D has a talent for creative fantasy and a tendency towards something like prayer, but because in the normal course of things (ie if hadn’t been influenced by humans at a young age and wasn’t currently a part of a mixed human/shark creature family) an idea like “if you let prey go sometimes you earn good luck” would have died with him, and therefore they have no religion.
Hannibal is geared towards an appreciation of language and material objects created by humans, but because he didn’t have a body of cultural knowledge to lift him prior towards meeting Will, his linguistical range was limited to instinctual means of communicating (showing teeth to fend someone off, lifting your chin to bear your throat to show agreement) and maybe a dozen or so other expressions or gestures that he and his twin developed between each other.
But YEAH that was a digression. Anywho the other thing about D’s and Hannibal’s babies size is that because there is such size variation within the species, I think everything related to reproduction kind of comes in a one-size-fits-all model, if you see what I mean? The range of size-variation between individuals is a lot smaller when it comes to reproductive organs.
Like if Will wasn’t in the picture and D and Hannibal met and decided to be partners, it would be dangerous for the smaller partner if a big partner produced above-average sized young, so all full-blooded newborn shark creatures run about the same size.
