“What’s that mark on your shoulder mean? I’ve never seen it before.”

Linde was well aware that her query wasn’t exactly polite. But, she couldn’t restrain her curiosity. From her studies of magic, she’d gleaned that most symbols held some sort of meaning. Magic applied that logic to the symbols on tomes. It made her want to understand what the man’s symbol meant.

“I don’t mean to pry! It’s just that ... I keep wondering what you can do. A mark like that is rare, and it usually means someone has great magical power. Why haven’t I seen you use yours?”

“So ... Gharnef will truly be coming here?”

“I can’t forgive him! He slew my father right before my eyes, and it was because of him I was forced to endure Knorda’s cruelty! I know the adage is forgive and forget ... but there are some things beyond that. I prepared myself for this chance, for revenge, and I will take it!”

Linde loosed another bolt of Aura, and the final of the mercenaries fell to her feet, dead. The man had been part of the pack of sellswords that had assisted in the murder of her father, Pontifex Miloah. Vengeance left her feeling cold. These men had been slated to die thanks to their defiance of Nohrian law, but Linde had unexpectedly volunteered to dole out the punishment. She was given the court’s approval. No doubt, they had hoped for am impressive demonstration of her magic. She hadn’t disappointed them. 

Her eyes slanted towards Leo, her mentor. Staring full of pleads for help. Once the nobles were out of earshot, she darted to his side, wiping the tears that had accumulated.

“I thought this would feel good. Vengeance, that is.”

“I recognize this men, Lord Leo. Their uniforms. I watched them skewer him! Oh, gods. And now that they’re dead, I feel nothing. Just an empty feeling like none of this had been worth it...”

Linde had prayed that he’d pity her plight. The way she’d made it sound, Knorda was an intimidating place---a kingdom that had tormented its subjects. He’d be surprised to learn it was a mere small village on the outskirts of Altea. But it was a small village that engaged in the worst atrocity possible: slave trade. They specialized in taking orphans away, and, upon the loss of her father Miloah, Linde had acquired the status. She’d only just escaped her fate. 

Hearing the man’s assurance brought forth a short sob. Then, she earnestly followed him.

“T-thank you...”

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do now. I-I’m Linde. My father’s name is Pontifex Miloah, but he’s passed on. And....and Knorda. You have to stop what’s going on there!”

“Lady Sheena ... you lost your father, did you not?"

Linde wavered for a moment. She knew that pain all too well, but she felt that this had to be said anyway. Like her, Sheena was a woman thrust into war, and she’d lost her only family. 

“I’m sorry. During the War of Shadows, I assisted Prince Marth in retaking his homeland. I may not have slew him myself, but I helped him kill your father. I know that pain, and yet ... I -- I didn’t stop to think that King Jiol had a child.”

  "Linde. I see some men tried to leave you flowers....

“Nonsense. All suitors are a danger.”

"Aren’t all things worth doing worth risking, though?”

“I would like to marry, you know! Would you have me deny every suitor and live as an old, unwed maid?”

“Father, I think there’s more at stake here than that.”

Well, Leo wasn’t her actual father; not by blood ties. She referred to him as such due to his status as her teacher and mentor. A title of respect that her late father would approve of.

“Isn’t there? A girl should worry about boys at this age!”
