This portrait by French painter Simon Vouet (1590-1649) from circa 1620 might depict his brother Aubin (1595-1641), who also worked as a painter. Simon Vouet started his career as a portait painter and at the tender age of 14 already had commissions in London. After travelling to Constantinople in 1611 and to Venice in 1612, he went to Rome in 1614. Vouet rose to prominence there and in 1627 would return to France to become ‘premier peintre du roi’ in the service of King Louis XIII (r. 1610-1643). He would also work for other prominent figures such as the famous Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642). Vouet is often credited with being highly influential in introducing the Italian Baroque style of painting to France. This portait is currently part of the Caravaggio-Bernini exhibiotion at @rijksmuseum and is from the collection of the Musée Réattu in Arles. #rijksmuseum #rijksmuseumamsterdam #museereattu #vouet #simonvouet #portrait #painting #art #baroque #france (bij Rijksmuseum) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8lWx42lNKG/?igshid=u5fpmxv17fo4
