While we wait for the Chicago mayoral runoff election results to come in and decide the fate of the Lucas Museum, let's look at today's #TerminologyTuesday term: docent or Museumsführerin.
Docent Docent is the title given to people who act as guides and educators in museums. They are almost always unpaid volunteers. Docents are trained to understand the content of their museum's exhibits and how best to teach it to visitors. The training program varies from museum to museum, but is usually fairly intense. Docents must have good communicative and interpretive skills, as well as being familiar with the scope of the museum's collection and exhibits. They usually shadow experience docents during tours before conducting tours on their own. Despite the nonexistent pay, the long hours, the rigorous training process, and the threat of being fired, docent positions are highly sought after. Well known museum especially usually have long waiting lists of people wanting to become docents.
In German, the word dozent refers to an educator at a university, on the same level of seniority as an assistant professor in the United States. The translation of museum docent, therefore is Museumsführerin, which can refer to the person acting as a guide or to an audio guide of the exhibit.
Museumsführerin Eine Museumsführerin ist eine Person, die Besucherinnen durch ein Museum leitet, und die Inhalte der Ausstellungen vermittelt. Museumsführerinnen sind fast immer unbezahlt. Sie werden erst vom Museum ausgebildet, damit sie die Inhalte der Ausstellungen verstehen und vermitteln koennen. Die Ausbildung ist von Museum zu Museum verschieden. Museumsführerinnen müssen kommunikatives Talent und interpretatorische Fähigkeiten haben, und müssen allgemein mit der Sammlung und Ausstellung vertraut sein. Nach ihrer Ausbildung beobachten Museumsführerinnen zuerst andere Führerinnen, bevor sie ihre eigenen Gruppen leiten. Obwohl sie nicht bezahlt werden und oft viel Zeit verlangen sind die Stellen stark begehrt. Populäre Museen haben oft eine Warteliste.
