It felt like everything he’d been doing in the last month was to survive and try to escape the grasp of war. Heck, he’d been doing that his whole life, and he was tired now. Everywhere he went felt unsafe, everything he did felt like a mistake. He just wanted, for once, to not have all of those responsibilities, all of this pressure he constantly felt. And he had found that, he’d found that with him.
Yet, Evan still constantly found himself trying to ruin this. Really, it was his own self-hatred, convinced he would never be any good to the other; it was a lie. But his brain couldn’t understand that, all his brain knew was hatred and pain. Maybe that was why he always found himself trying to escape: he didn’t know how to react to this softness, he didn’t feel like he deserved it. But in this moment, it was the one thing he wanted more than anything.
Evan rolled over in the bed to face the other, staring at him for a moment. He really lucked out with him, and he still couldn’t understand how it happened, or why the other man stuck with him. Finally, he opened his mouth to say something - one word, one name. “Gideon.” Slowly, his hand reached up to the other’s face, fingers going down his jaw while he seemed to wake up from his sleep. Evan didn’t say more as he moved closer, but his face was screaming ‘don’t leave me’. As his lips pressed against the others, he felt some feeling or relief, like nothing mattered anymore. And nothing did matter anymore except for them.

He tried not to look back as he did his best to lift her up to safety, knowing well enough the ground was crumbling was, and it was close by now, and he needed his attention to be on her. He felt some relief when she finally got on the upper floor, not only because she was safe, but also because he knew he finally did a good action before it was too late. And it was too late, only then accepting his fate as he took a few steps away from her and the hand she was extended to help him climb. “Don’t worry about me, this is the ending I deserve.”

She was right there, and as he watched her from afar, he could only remember moments from the past: the pain, the guilt, the sadness. He was stuck in place for a moment, unable to move, scared of her reaction when she would see him. But then she turned, a smile appearing on her face when she saw him, and he Evan could only reciprocate her smile as he headed closer, his hand fidgeting with the ring box he had hidden in his pocket.

“Can’t you just pretend for five minutes?” Evan said with an exasperated sigh as he looked at the other boy, clearly not impressed. He wasn’t sure what possessed him to hire Gideon for the job, but it was too short notice now to just switch to someone else, already seeing the girl approaching. Well, he needed to show he was over her, and if the other wasn’t helping, there was only one thing left: he grabbed the other’s face, pressing his lips against his in the most natural way possible.

The gun was still fuming when he noticed the other person who was there, and had to unluckily witness the crime he’d just committed. Evan’s eyes rounded, searching for the right words to say, even if he knew there was nothing that would probably reach her. “Juliet, I swear, this isn’t what it looks like.” he started, trying to make a step in her direction without scaring her away.
