King Tuff - Was Dead
Rated: Must-Hear
King Tuff is Vermont guitarist Kyle Thomas. He's involved in several bands, including Feathers, Witch (with Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis), and Happy Birthday. I first came into contact with Thomas via Happy Birthday's s/t record, which received a fair amount of blog hype last year. Happy Birthday is framed in scuzz, but ultimately an airy, dreamy retro-pop record - not the sort of thing I gravitate towards. I was a little surprised to learn that Happy Birthday's singer had released a more "conventional" garage rock record back in 2008, so I checked it out.
A couple of things make Was Dead stand out among the seemingly millions of garage rock records that have dropped in the past decade: the vocals and the riffs. King Tuff can sneer and scream with the best of them, but he also sings in a quaver that hints at the sensitivity and vulnerability that lies beneath the hardened surface of every great songwriter. And oh, those riffs! I love the meandering, glammy guitar lines streaming through tracks like "Sun Medallion" and "Freak When I'm Dead."
