My weekly must list

Entertainment Weekly, aka my favorite magazine, has The Must List in every issue--a rundown of the top 10 things EW loves that week. Here’s my version. 

1. Joseph’s “SOS (Overboard)

 A good friend introduced me to Joseph, the trio made up of the amazing Closner sisters--Natalie, Meegan, and Allison--and they’ve quickly become a favorite of mine, particularly with this song.

“The place to improve the world is first in one’s own heart and head and hands, and then work outward from there.”

2. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values

I’m not sure where I first heard about this book, but it’s been on my list to read for years. I recently purchased a copy and started reading it last week. But now, I’m stalled in the middle because the author, Robert M. Pirsig, died on Monday. Finishing his work will be worth it, but very bittersweet.

3. The Leftovers

The final season of The Leftovers premieres soon and since I recently subscribed to HBO Now, I decided to give the first season a shot. So far, I’m confused as fuck about what’s happening. But it’s strangely fascinating to think about how the world would respond if millions of people disappeared off the face of the Earth suddenly.

4. Modern Love

“But by not calling someone, say, ‘my boyfriend,’ he actually becomes something else, something indefinable. And what we have together becomes intangible. And if it’s intangible it can never end because officially there’s nothing to end. I’ve read The New York Times Modern Love column for years, but lately I’ve found myself going back to this piece by Jordana Narin, who won Modern Love’s College Essay Contest, about how we label relationships and the power those labels give us. Sometimes by refusing to label something, to call something what it really is, we prevent ourselves from moving forward.

5. Lynsey Addario’s Instagram

Seriously, if you’re not following her on Instagram you’re missing out. You should also just get a copy of her book It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War while you’re at it. You won’t be disappointed.

6. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Every week, without fail, John Oliver’s show gets better. His 20-minute segments on issues that actually matter are basically keeping me sane during what so far has been a crazy year.

7. Blackstar by David Bowie

Saturday was Record Store Day, so I finally used the holiday to pick-up a copy of David Bowie’s Blackstar for my personal collection (thank you, Crooked Beats of Alexandria). I’ve listened to the full album twice now, and both times it’s made me cry. Bowie was a master, and this album was his perfect way of saying goodbye.
