14. illness (for Sven!)

Illness. The word has many meaning for Jake, some of them with a meaner connotation than others. He finds Feng and Meg arguing over the new guy when he’s nowhere in sight, bickering back about forth about if he’s ill or not, and, quite frankly, it’s starting to get on Jake’s nerves. even when Sven returns, they still carry on after looking over their shoulders and confirming that, yes, it was Sven that had arrived.

And he sat right next to him. Oh, well, at least he can’t talk my head off like Meg could.

H jitters out a head nod, and even the barest him of a smile at the man, but doesn’t say a word, matching his muteness. How to you talk to someone who’s mute? Horrible body language, of course.

He hasn’t really come across Sven’s sort before. It’s not as though he makes real effort with the other survivors to begin with— keeping them all at arm’s length is all he can do to keep from getting tangled up caring about the people he had to watch be gutted-bled-worn down by the day. 

What he does know is the other likes his notepad—Jake’s seen him scribbling away at it, watching birds or studying something mid-trial, or pondering the other survivors by the campfire. It doesn’t really concern him, whatever goes on in the man’s head, but he supposes they have that in common, watching on the outskirts

“So you don’t talk, huh?” It’s a candid observation; he’s by the fire, feeding scraps to one of the entity’s crows. Sven’s the only company today—others off in a trial, he’d expect. A wayward glances catches at the faint scarring at the journalist’s throat, and he realizes he’s never really bothered to notice it before. “That’s fine, you’re in good company” he continues, shifting to let the bird hop down from his arm, turns his gaze away pointedly. 

“I uh…” Hesitation hangs like a haze in the air; he’s never been good with this. “Thanks, for last trial.” You’d think he was pulling teeth. “If you hadn’t been watching my back… I don’t know. Anyway. You have a good eye.”
