I just discovered this blog and I think you do amazing work. I had a question about Alien: Covenant, I was wondering how a human female could die from having a parasitic alien in her stomach, repeatedly, day after day. Elizabeth Shaw the character had become host to an alien and we can only assume David had tried to prolong her life with surgery and removal. Since the gestation is likened to pregnancy could being deprived of nutrients or starvation cause death? If so in how much time? Thanks.
OK well quite aside from the fact I haven’t seen the movie I’m afraid I’m going to have to call ‘Rule of Reality’ on this one.
This is way too far outside the realm of what is normally possible for me to guess at a realistic way this could work.
There are some insects that reproduce by laying their eggs in other insects. In these species the host’s death occurs because the parasites eventually eat their vital organs.
However the reason this works in insects is because of scale. The hosts are still of a size where they can (for example) get their oxygen via diffusion through their skin rather than with dedicated lungs.
If this was scaled up to a human host the parasite would either have to be of similar size to existing human parasites (see the Guinea worm for the larger varieties, or not if you don’t want to see incredibly ill children) or the parasite would kill the host almost instantly. We don’t really have that much ‘spare’ space and there isn’t a whole lot a creature like that could eat without killing the host.
That’s all I’ve got I’m afraid.

Synthetics are to interact with the crew and do things muthur cannot do. Humans are the back up to the AI. AI runs everything from environmental controls to navigation. But synthetics cannot think for themselves, they do not make decisions. So they cannot captain or pilot a ship.
// wait wait.... synthetics cant think for themselves?? i dont feel like i agree with that. there’s a lot of evidence in the franchise that shows synthetics making choices or having thoughts other than what humans or the ships ai’s tell them. bishop choosing to circle around in the air at the end of aliens, for example, despite hicks being unconscious and ripley ordering him to stay. or him asking to be terminated in a3. (not to mention like everything david ever does ever. but i’m not sure you’re counting the prequels.) i just dont think i can get behind that one.
