He probably should have been watching where he was going, but then again how often did cars go by anymore? Cody had been walking for days, filthy and matted with blood, mud and dirt from hunts and injuries he’d lost count of weeks ago, he thought little of it when aching pawpads found purchase on the roadway, toenails making a faint clicking noise as he crossed. The river he’d plodded through some time ago had deposited a thick layer of scum and slime in his fur and on the thick collar ringing his neck, and exhaustion had made him sluggish.

So perhaps it was to be expected, when he was unable to find the speed required to run out of the road as a pair of headlights barreled for him and bounced him off the left side, inspiring a yelp from his mouth and laying him prone underneath an overturned sedan- it really, really wasn’t Cody’s day. or week. or month- or really, his apocalypse as a whole. He heard the brakes of the truck screech a few feet ahead, blue eyes lifting to peer down at the approaching figure. If this was a vampire, he was fucked, there was no way he could manage a shift right now, he could hardly lift his head to offer a warning snarl, lips pulled back past bloody white teeth.
