Untamed thoughts 1

I finally started watching The Untamed after I have finished reading the novel.  These are just some of my thoughts after watching the first 2-3 epidsodes:

1) so apparently wei wuxian apparently canonically looks like himself here instead of Mo Xuanyu - that’s why he keeps wearing the mask. I didn’t realize this but now it explains why some of the fanart based on this adaptation looks that way. It also makes since that they would do this to explain why his actor looks the same in both time periods

2) I’m really enjoying it so far - the first 2 episodes were very funny!! Also as someone who hasn’t really read much about xianxia before reading mxtx novels or knows much about Chinese history/fantasy, the setting really helps me visualize what some of the architecture and clothing is supposed to look like in the novels.

3) the things that bother me are all the common novel to movie adaptation problems I think - but there are a lot of them.

          - The condensed “16 years ago” timeline - I don’t feel like condensing it this much makes a whole lot of sense other than justifying that the actors look

the same age the whole time?? but i would have gone with it if they said they were even younger          - Wen Ruohan has a “larger” I guess villain arc than what I think he really needs. Why does there need to be a yin iron?? Where is my full arc of wei wuxian bothering lan wanji at cloud recesses?? LOL          - those I can live with but the one thing that really bothers me is Lan Wanji’s characterization here!!  They’ve “simplified” it I guess is the best way for me to explain it. Which makes sense for a movie adaptation I think - so it’s not necessarily unexpected or unjustified. In the novel - we’re first introduced to Lan Wanji when he is young - supposedly younger than when we meet him in the Untamed. He’s a stickler for the rules - but he’s never put in a situation where he refuses an entire clan entry to cloud recesses or singles wwx out without a justification. The cloud recesses arc in the novel focuses on wwx acting up during his time at cloud recesses and butting heads with lwj. Then as he gets older they continue to butt heads out of his concern for wwx. I feel like the way we’re introduced to young lwj in the untamed makes it seem like he’s such a stickler for the rules that it destroys some of his compassion for others -- which is not a thing in the novel especially as he gets older. This does make sense why some of the fanfic I have read that is based off the untamed rather than the novel seemed ooc for lwj - it aligns with his character in this adaptation.          - the last major change I feel like is jiang cheng’s characterization. Again it’s “simplified” which makes sense for a movie BUT he’s more of a “villain” here, giving wwx the final blow and everything

Thoughts on Sumeru Arc Genshin Impact

So I finally finished the Sumeru archon quest today ... and wow it's my favorite one yet

******Spoilers ahead so please be aware*****

I feel like it's been the most cohesive storyline so far. In Mondstat - when Venti's gnosis was stolen from him, it didn't really feel like a complete storyline if that makes sense. In Liyue - I really respect Zhongli for retiring but we really didn't see him have much character growth during the quest itself - he started out wanting to retire and finished that way too. The Inazuma story was ... a lot. I felt like we never really got to know Ei like the other archons - she was the antagonist for most of the plot.

But for Sumeru - we're friends with Nahida. She has an entire arc come full circle. She's constantly overshadowed by her predecessor to the point that she almost allows herself to be completely forgotten. And as she learns her own worth and to become her own person - she has to completely let go of and erase GLRD - and learn to stand on her own.

It was just really well done, well written and moving! I thought Venti was my favorite archon but now I'm not so sure anymore.

Anyway, if you've played Genshin, what do you think? (Keep in mind I haven't played through Fontaine yet).

Ok so I started playing Baldur's Gate 3

I'd like to preface this post by saying that I've never even tried to play DnD before ╮(╯▽╰)╭

Starting this game felt so clunky because of that. I had no idea what I was doing!

I decided to play as the Dark Urge because I wanted to customize my character but, as I tell everyone, I'm secretly evil and I thought I could relate.

Turns out the Dark Urge is a little bit more bloodthirsty than me...

Anyway I made myself a tiefling who's a sorcerer with wild magic. I had no idea what any of that would do--I just thought everything sounded cool. However, I'm doing ok so far so must have not made too many wrong choices with the stat selections.

I finally saw the Boy and the Heron

I finally got to see The Boy and the Heron yesterday! ****This post contains spoilers so if you haven't seen it, don't read!****

And wow--I just, I absolutely loved it. I'll try to make this some sort of review, but it might not be coherent.

The feeling of grief, saddness and wrongness at the beginning of the movie was so amazingly well done. We were shown how it permeated all of Mahito's world.

You know those posts about more people liking subtitles on everything now - and I think that's great-

But sometimes I wonder if it has more to do with our generation's collective hearing damage, you know from like the ear bud thing etc, starting to catch up to us

Other thoughts of a different note today:

why are there so many antis in the mxtx fandom, especially tgcf???? Like it’s seriously astounding for something based on a canon made of adult content with at least a few dark themes to begin with. I feel like I’m walking on glass all the time hoping I don’t run into one of them

Also seeing takes that boil down to: if you like certain series (ie svsss) or certain characters you’re a bad person?? Like how does this even make any sense they were all written by the same person

Also the number of times I’ve seen “minor/i’m a minor/etc” - like that’s a hard block you’re not even old enough to read the source material what are you doing here???
