I went to Furality Luma Festival in vrchat and spent most of the mini-con in the event space on the highest cliff, sitting in the water watching performances beside my partner. I finally picked up the [irl] oil paint again, but this time I tried cold wax technique with some Dorlands I'd acquired recently. It costs spoons to mix up the wax and oil paint, but it's like working with buttercream frosting, really tactile! I really want to loosen up and say more with less/I'm prone to overworking, so this was all done with a palette knife. My intention was to paint the figures of our avatars in there (based on vrc photo refs I snapped) but I chickened out bc I like this painting where it is. Then I realized that I have to learn how to photograph this stuff, a whole new skillset. >>

as though I haven't also been diverting energy to learning blender and unity and now substance painter so i can be a funny animal in virtual reality.

haritora feets - Roxy | watercolor sketch, pigments PBk11, PY184, PB29, PV19

I used VRChat to actually socialize! I followed @cavern-of-remembrance here on tumblr when I was first learning about VRC. Roxy’s VR self-portraits inspired me to take up photography in VRC, where I met other photographers! And there’s SO many similarly inspiring artists of all mediums I’ve been introduced to through her reblogs!

Talking about the tech of VR seems to be “the weather” of VRC conversations. Roxy uses a headset and additional hardware (HaritoraX) for full body tracking, so when we met I was like “oooo leggies!” A good icebreaker topic, I think?

When I was describing the hangout to a partner the next day, the words that came out to describe the additional hardware were “she’s got haritora feets”.

I think the vivid hue of her hair strikes me as very close to PB29/ultramarine blue, which made me want to paint it! So that was the base of the palette. The gradient stripe on the pants was so fun to paint!!

Furality Aqua - cold wax oils 5 x 7”

pigments: PR122 + PG7 + PW6

a painting of this scene from the Furality Aqua lobby world (VRChat) took only three sessions (not including the underpainting, so technically four ig).

I love PG7 (phthalo green blue shade) and PR122 (quinacridone magenta) as a limited palette for all the purples and blues mixable from them. They each have a pretty dark value, so using PW6 (titanium white) or paper white (in transparent watercolor) gets a large value range, too.

I like cold wax medium bc I can wait a bit for some curing, then scratch details back out (toothpicks used in this one, to reveal the green-white underpainting layer).

my me | watercolor, roughly based on my edit of a FoxiPaws avatar for VRC. pigments: scrungle, PO73, glow pigment x PG7 x PY3? (homemade, do not recommend; watercolor is The Worst Medium for glow pigments but I made 3 full pans last year and thought I should use it haha)

ootd transparent watercolor sketch | no lineart sketch/built up from gesture brushstrokes. it was fun to lay in the lineart after the fields of color (and flood the lines to connect them)
