SHE STILL FELT SHOOK, AND COULDN’T PINPOINT THE SOURCE. shoulders still shivered as if she were exposed to the biting winds of skyrim’s cold north, and her breath still unsteady. it’d been hours, but she hadn’t been able to shake the feeling of intense unease that still brewed within her. so she sat silently with the cloak wrapped around her body, staring into the fire-- the only source of light in the oppressive dark.
it was a bandit’s camp, and corpses still littered the ground, covered by a thin dusting of white thanks to the light snowfall around them. the fire was already lit from earlier, and sticks with burnt skeever tails skewered on them still roasted over what was left of it.
it hadn’t been long since the camp had been cleared out, but it was no easy feat. it was no easy feat because she didn’t have anything to do with the death that hung in the air-- no, the bodies were of his doing. all of them.
it was a starting reminder of his deadliness. a stark reminder to what hid just under the surface when they sparred. how deep did that danger dwell most days, she could only wonder.
“ thank you. ” she spoke softly, sheepishly --- delvin would chastise her for being embarrassed of a helping hand, but she couldn’t help it. she wanted to prove herself to her guildmaster, not be the victim in need of assistance-- but she wouldn’t deny she was grateful for his intervention.
for the words he spoke, too, although she had to wonder what biting comment he wanted to say instead. SURELY HE WOULD NEVER SAY SUCH A THING TO HER. not without following it up with something more scathing. ‘niceness’ just wasn’t befitting of him.
she peered at him through the fire, where he sat across from her, warming his hands against its heat. her gaze was searching, perhaps expectant-- though ultimately, it conceded as she looked away, distracted by the way her breathing felt tight and constricted-- like something lodged in her throat. she exhaled, took a moment more of contemplation, then continued in a softer voice;
“ ...but i don’t think you can promise me that, mercer. ” even if i want you to.
@mxxnblind:
“Maven … ?” he replies, a dry lilt carrying a grim bastardization of what could only be labeled as testy humor – all in an irritable sigh. He wasn’t in the mood. & somehow his mood curdles further. Mercer bristles, turning his back to Elona as he takes exceptional interest in the parchment in hand — all but burning holes into the paper, with the intensity of his stare. Empty if not for this inferno that ever burned behind faded eyes, which never do meet her own. The physicality of it kept him grounded, while the ink & words spun in a nauseating pace. He knew the name. He knew who he’d so cruelly gifted this unrelenting blame upon. & still the blame was his own.
Elona rolls her eyes at his turned back, exasperation painting her expression. And yet she can’t help but humor him, at least for a moment -- perhaps it would help to put him in a more agreeable mood. “ Yes, Maven. You’re absolutely correct. Finally decided she had enough of our help and now she’s turned on us. ” Gods, if only Maven would leave them be. The argonian detested any sort of meeting with the nord woman, even if they were very brief and only for business. (Thinks she’s better than everyone else...)
Blinking, her gaze drops to the parchments that litter his desk, heaving a sigh. “ We should have known she’d come back, ” muttered only loud enough for the guildmaster to hear. “ There’s no way she would’ve stayed in hiding. She’s doing this to get back at you, I think both of us know that. ” A pause as she straightens, carefully making her way to his side. “ ... what should we do? ”
“You think you’ve won, huh?!” ;; from robyn !

Such an inquiry brought a boisterous laugh from the bloodsucker. Footsteps fell lightly a generous distance away from her chained form. A cocky grin remained spread across the Bosmer’s face as amber eyes burned into her. He was quite pleased with his catch, despite not having the appetite for her at the moment.
❝ I do. In fact, I know I’ve won. ❞
He’d managed to securely bind her to a tree, locking the chains in place. Though he’d specifically left them just loose enough for her to pick the lock if she wished. With enough skill, she could weasel her arms free and undo the chains holding the rest of her body in place. And that, was exactly what he wanted. A challenge. The chase was a vital portion to the hunt, made things more interesting, and the reward more sweet.
❝ Go ahead and pick your way out, little thief. I’ll be right here waiting for you. ❞
With that threat, he sauntered off the sit by the little camp he’d made. He was not hungry enough to bother with her just yet. A nap perhaps, would give him enough time to work up the appetite. Whether or not she attempted to escape, it didn’t truly matter. He was more than confident enough in his ability to capture her. And if she didn’t try anything? Fine. He would have an easy meal to wake up to, albeit without the additional thrill of the chase.
