Description: Reader gets pulled out of bed by George Weasley to go enjoy the first snowfall of the season at Hogwarts. (George Weasley x reader, friends to lovers with tension, fluff)
A/N: So this is ~technically~ my first George fic? I started writing one a long time ago and then got pneumonia. Not sure if that's the author's curse but I was going into finals season and didn't want to risk it! Anyways, I'm finally writing one and I don't know how I feel about it. I love George but I'm not sure if I love how I write him. And yes, this is a break from my regular Tom Riddle fics but I'm working on a request rn so I'll be back with that soon!
Warnings: none
Hogwarts was not known to have the best heating system. Well, actually, it didn’t have a heating system at all, at least not in the traditional sense of the matter. Instead, a few Warming Charms were cast on the castle and everyone hoped they’d work well enough. Most times they did, at least in the dorms. You were used to your bed being warm and cozy while you were asleep, so when you were hit by a cold blast of air one night, it woke you up instantly.
“What the-” you started to say loudly, when a hand clamped over your mouth.
“Shh, or you’re going to wake everyone else up!” A familiar voice hissed in your ear before uncovering your mouth.
You glared up in the dark at George, the only person who would have the boldness to come in and wake you up in the middle of the night. “Did you have to wake me up like that?” You whispered indignantly, only to be answered by the part of the covers still on your legs getting charmed away, exposing more of your skin to the cold air.. You opened your mouth to protest again, but George beat you to it.
“I’m the worst, you don’t know why they don’t lock the doors better, I better buy you lots of butterbeer to make up for it… yeah, yeah, I know the drill by now. Come on!” George rolled his eyes and pulled you up, silencing your protests. You scrambled to yank your shirt down from where it had ridden up as he tossed you your cloak and shoes.
“Where are we-” you began, but he pressed his hand to your mouth again.
“Just hurry up,” he said, letting you glare at him for a second longer before stepping back to let you change.
He barely waited for you to finish shoving on your shoes before grabbing your hand and practically pulling you out of the room, letting the door close softly behind you.
“You still haven’t answered me,” you said, finally able to talk at a regular volume now that you were out of the dorm room. “Where are you taking me?”
George just flashed you a smile as he hurried down the steps beside you. “Look out the window,” he advised, letting go of your hand long enough for you to go to the windows.
It was pitch dark outside but you could see the flurries of bright white snow hitting the glass of the window. It had been supposed to snow earlier that day but hadn’t before you’d finally decided to go to bed.
You spun around to face George, who was pulling something out from where it had been hidden under one of the squashy armchairs next to the fire.
“You woke me up to see the snow?” You said, feigning annoyance, though you were struggling to bite back your smile. He grinned back at you, unfurling whatever he had in his hands.
“Of course,” he responded, “couldn’t let the first snowfall of the season go by without taking you out in it with me!” You rolled your eyes fondly and only then focused fully on what he was holding. It was a shimmering, almost translucent dark silver material. It looked like-
“George Weasley,” you exclaimed sharply, trying to keep the playfulness out of your voice. “Did you steal Harry’s Invisibility Cloak when he wasn’t looking?”
George shrugged innocently, then shook his head with a laugh. “No, he let me borrow it,” he told you. A couple seconds longer of your disapproving look and he let out a dramatic sigh. “Fine, I stole it. But we’ll only be a bit!” And with that, he tossed half of it over your head and you vanished.
“If he catches us, it’s your fault,” you warned him, but he didn’t seem too bothered as the two of you snuck towards the common room door. He pushed it open and slunk out, but not before you glanced briefly behind you.
“Isn’t Fred coming with us?” You questioned. The twins went everywhere together. Even sneaking out in the middle of the night. Scratch that, you added wryly, especially when sneaking out.
“Uh, not tonight,” George shook his head, pulling out the Marauders Map to keep an eye on where patrolling professors might be. “He, um, wanted to stay in.”
That didn’t sound like Fred at all, but you decided not to push it. Especially when he ignored your confused look.
The hallways were cold and the chilly drafts of wind that always seemed to be there didn’t help. The two of you crept along the corridors, keeping one lit wand trained on the map to make sure you didn’t run into Filch or any professors. Except for one near miss with Peeves and a bucket of stinksap near the Great Hall, you made it out of the castle without encountering anyone.
As soon as the door shut behind you, you tossed the cloak off of you and rushed into the snow. It was freezing and you definitely should’ve been wearing warmer clothes, but once George grabbed you up around your waist to toss you over his shoulder, you didn’t care. You shrieked with laughter as he chased you around, and then laughed at his almost offended reaction when you enchanted a snowball to follow him around and repeatedly smack onto his head before re-forming and doing it all over again.
It could’ve been thirty minutes, an hour, or two hours before you finally collapsed back on the snow next to George, out of breath from laughing and your intense snowball fight. You were chilled and soaked to the bone.
“Merlin,” you gasped, leaning your head back and feeling the icy snow seep into your hair. “I’m completely frozen!”
George snorted, running a hand down his arm and shaking off clumps of white. “I’ll be taking a very hot bath when we get back inside,” he agreed, shivering a little.
You tilted your head towards him and barely held back your smile when he gestured for you to rest your head against his chest. Wrapping an arm around your shoulders, he held you so close you barely felt cold anymore. Instead, all you could focus on was the feeling of his arm around you and your cheek pressed up against where his heart was beating steadily underneath it. He’d had his arm around you before, and you’d even laid together like this before, but this time it felt different.
Really, it had been feeling different for quite some time.
You both gradually got quiet, the only sound the faint whistling of the wind and the water of the Black Lake hitting the edges of the shore. It would probably be iced over soon, enough for everyone to go skating tomorrow.
Your breathing slowed and you felt George’s arm tighten around you, pulling you closer to him. Trying to ignore how you were practically pressed up against him, you turned your head to rest your chin on his chest.
“Thank you,” you smiled, “this was…” You’d meant to say fun, but somehow it didn’t describe it well enough. You’d always loved spending time with George, though these days you seemed to think about it afterwards more often. Remembering the small touches, the way he’d look at you, how sometimes you’d think he- “This was…” you began to distract yourself from where those thoughts had been headed, but again no words came out.
“I know,” he whispered, gripping your shoulders and consequently pulling you closer into him. You let your hand rest against his chest to steady yourself as his gaze tracked across your face and- oh Merlin, as he let his eyes fall to your lips?
Before you could process the motion or how you both seemed to slightly lean forward, there was the sound of a door banging open in the distance. You immediately whipped your head up to see where it came from, and to your dismay, you saw Filch standing there, outlined from the burning torches inside the castle.
Your wide eyes flicked back to George’s equally alarmed ones. Without another word, he rolled away from you and you scrambled to your feet.
“Who’s there?!” You heard Filch’s shout from the door.
George immediately grabbed your hand and set off at a sprint past Filch. It didn’t take long for you to emerge from the darkness of the grounds and into view of the gamekeeper, who still stood surrounded by light from the castle.
“Hey! Stop right there!” He yelled, but George and you were already halfway up the hill towards the side of the castle where a secret passageway was.
“He’s gonna see your hair!” You gasped as George continued to pull you up the hill, your hand still firmly in his. George winced, a hand coming up to his bright red hair, and yanked the Invisibility Cloak out from where it had been shoved in his pocket. Barely stopping to make sure it was thrown over both of you properly, you continued to run with him up the snowy hill until he tripped on a rock, hidden underneath the snow.
“Keep running!” You exclaimed, pulling him up and yelping as he tripped again, this time bringing you down with him. You fell back into the snow with him collapsed over you, laughing, but Filch’s footsteps were growing nearer so George leapt up, holding out his hand for you before you set off running again.
Once you reached the Herbology greenhouses and the trap door you knew led to the basement passageway, George started muttering incantations to reveal the hidden entrance while you risked glances behind you to keep an eye out for Filch. He was halfway to you now.
“Hurry!” You urged him, hurrying over and nudging desperately at his shoulder.
“I’m almost there, but don’t stand so close or you’’ll-” his warning was cut off as the trap door suddenly opened, sending you flying down into the corridor below. George fell in with you, only barely managing to cast a spell to soften your landing in time. As soon as you felt your back touch the cool stone floor you shot a charm up to lock the trap door again, and then George was pulling you to your feet and racing down the corridor and up into the Great Hall above.
You made it back to the common room unscathed, though extremely out of breath.
“That- was-” you wheezed, leaning over your knees as George pulled the Invisibility Cloak from over you, “-a close call,” you finished as he muttered the password and the warm, cozy common room was revealed to you.
“That’s putting it lightly,” George laughed as the door swung shut behind him, “if we had been any slower we’d be getting a strict lecture right now.”
“Complete with threats about ‘the old punishments’ and what a pity it is he can’t let us hang by our thumbs for a few days,” you rolled your eyes, collapsing on the sofa and letting the heat from the fire wash over you. George hummed in agreement, sitting down next to you and throwing your legs into his lap. You both laid in silence for a while, until you were properly dry and warm.
“Well,” you sighed, pushing yourself into a sitting position. “I should probably be going back up into my dorm now, lest someone catch us still up this late.”
George nodded. “Though they’d be up just this late too,” he pointed out and you laughed, leaning over to ruffle his hair before standing up. You were halfway off the couch when he wrapped an arm around your waist, startling you.
“This was fun,” he said quietly, voicing your thoughts from earlier, though the way he said it made your heart pick up speed.
“What, almost getting caught by Filch?” You laughed nervously as his thumb slowly rubbed at the side of your hip. George laughed too, letting his head fall against your arm and making your breath catch in your throat.
“Yes,” he said, and you smiled despite yourself. You’d been friends with the twins long enough to know that risk was sometimes what made it fun. “But everything before that too.”
You nodded and looked down at your shoes, not trusting yourself to meet his eyes right now without exposing what you were feeling.
“Yeah,” you agreed in a near-whisper.
George hugged your waist a little tighter for a split second before letting you go, leaning back against the couch. You instantly missed the feeling of his arm around you, but forced yourself to pull back, straightening your cloak and running a hand through your still slightly wet hair.
“I’ll see you in the morning,” you said, backing away towards the staircase.
“Mhmm,” George agreed, looking sleepy. You fought the instinct to go back and curl up next to him, knowing that would only create more problems for you tomorrow morning. You’d dreamt about waking up next to him for so long, you didn’t want to know how you’d feel if you actually did.
Well, you know exactly how you’d feel. The problem is, you wouldn’t know how he’d feel.
You were halfway up the stairs when you heard him call your name. Tentatively. You glanced back, keeping a hand on the rail to steady you and your heart, which was beating faster now.
“Yeah?” You said when he didn’t say anything after a minute. He shook his head.
“Never mind. I’ll tell you later,” he said, turning his head away. You hesitated, but the sound of a door opening from somewhere above you changed your mind.
“Okay,” you decided. “Goodnight.”
You heard his soft echo of goodnight from behind you as you hurried up the rest of the steps, rushing into your dorm room and shutting the door as quietly as you could. Your roommates were still asleep, with no knowledge of your midnight interlude with George.
Thankfully, the covers on your bed were back from when George had charmed them away, so you were able to get right back in bed after changing into pajamas. You threw the covers up around your shoulders and tried to go to sleep, but all you could think of was George’s face and how he’d definitely been looking at your lips before Filch had interrupted you two.
Whatever George wants to tell me later, you thought before drifting off to sleep, I hope it has something to do with that.
And downstairs, George was still sitting on the couch in the common room and watching the fire die down, cursing himself for not telling you how he felt on the one night he had been able to convince Fred to let him be alone with you.
