❝ Let’s get the hell out of here. ❞ (Niakia)
It’d been three years to the day since Saskia committed herself. Initially she thought her time there would be short-lived. That she would return to her home and resume her job as a substitute teacher within six months. It wasn’t until her treatment began and the meetings with her group and therapist which unveiled there was far more which needed discussion and digging. It wasn’t easy, not in the slightest, and Saskia’s defensiveness kicked in because she didn’t agree with what was said.
It wasn’t until the last year, during a session which left her far more exhausted than she could remember, she crumbled and became receptive to the psychiatrist.
Now, many, many months since that day, she stuffed the last of her belongings into the suitcase which she brought with her when she arrived. As she set the case down on the floor Saskia looked around the room and recalled all the memories which occurred within these four walls. So many have come and gone; those who were well enough to return to their outside worlds while some...well, some to other rehab centers.
A small knock came at the door behind her and Saskia turned partway to find Niamh. The women went to her and wrapped an arm around her waist. “It’ll be weird to wake up in a hotel tomorrow morning.” she said, cheek on Niamh’s shoulder as the enormity of starting over sunk in.
There was quiet between them and Saskia wondered how Niamh was handling her own goodbye as she’d been at this center far longer than she. But the good thing about this goodbye was it was the start of their life together as a couple outside of the institute.
“ Let’s get the hell out of here.“ Niamh finally said when they lingered a few seconds longer in the now vacant room.
Saskia raised her head just enough to give her girlfriend a kiss on the cheek, someone whom helped her so much during one of the hardest times in her life. A person who meant everything to her and who she know would be such a good influence in her life, just as she was with her.
“Yeah.” she sighed and looked at the door, which was wide open. “Let’s.”
