ronan and adam going to play laser tag with adam’s uni friends, and adam doing the thing where he pushes ronan up against a wall, kisses him, and then shoots his laser gun at him while making out. he backs down slowly with a teasing grin when ronan realises what just happened, and ronan is too busy reigning in his frustrating attraction and being heart eyes at a playful adam to be annoyed at all
i truly love thinking about how adam has def asked ronan about when he started having feelings for him, and ronan being like um??? you know i don't really remember? definitely not the exact second i laid eyes on you tho
Omg anon I’ve thought of this exact scenario before and it’s so adorable. here’s how I imagine it would go:
Adam and Ronan are in bed late at night, legs tangled and arms hooked around waists, Ronan facing Adam as they talk in hushed tones even though they’re the only ones in the house. The late hour calls for openness and quiet voices, smiles exchanged over dumb topics and silly childhood stories.
They have been quiet for some time, Ronan has started to wonder if Adam is about to fall asleep, when Adam asks “When did you know you liked me? Or, I don’t know, had feelings for me?”
The question sends sparks shooting to Ronan’s stomach. He squeezes his eyes shut, looks at Adam, and then immediately has to look away before he spills everything. He hums as if thinking about it, says “I don’t know. it’s.. complicated.” but Adam is not fooled; he has already seen the look on Ronan’s face. A curious Adam is impossible to deter.
He pokes Ronan in the side once, “You’re really not going to tell me? Why?”
Ronan groans. There’s a mischievous light in Adam’s eyes, a smile lingering just at the edges of his lips. Ronan thinks he can see that smile in full bloom if he were slightly braver. He rolls his eyes and pokes Adam back, they have both moved to their sides now, legs untangled, gazes caught together “What do you care, Parrish? I just knew at some point.”
Ronan knows he’s a whisper above mumbling. He feels heat pooling in his face and is thankful for the semi darkness they’re in, but he can’t hold Adam’s gaze any longer and that’s enough of a tell if you’re Adam Parrish.
“It was early on wasn’t it?” Adam says, a grin breaking free. “How early are we talking?”
“Pride is a sin.” Ronan says, and then when Adam’s smile doesn’t waver. “Adam. Jesus. Yeah, fine, very early on.”
Adam bites his lower lip to control his smile, brushes his thump along Ronan’s brow and then down his cheek. “It’s okay, you don’t have to say when.”
His voice is shaky with hidden emotions or suppressed laughter or something, and now of course Ronan has to tell him. To let Adam voice whatever he’s feeling in return. He scoots closer to Adam, until their foreheads are almost touching, and exhales slowly.
“First time I saw you. First day of school.” Ronan whispers. A secret for only the two of them. “You didn’t see me, but I saw you and I. Shit, I don’t know. I knew. It sounds stupid, but I just knew. Didn’t acknowledge it for a long time, but I think the feelings part of it was always there.”
Adam looks at him in silence for a few heartbeats, his face going through several emotions; the way it always does when he’s working through something. Surprise, delight, realisation, sadness, delight again –Ronan tries to catch all of them and hold them close to his chest. His heart is beating loud enough for the both of them to hear, but he focuses on Adam’s expressions because he’s the only one allowed to see this version of Adam -the one not trying to hide its complexity.
Adam’s expression settles on something soft. His eyes are so full of emotion that it’s almost challenging to keep eye contact, but Ronan isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. Love. Adam’s expression settles on love.
“God, Ronan,” Adam says and then kisses him, first a peck that’s achingly sweet, and then a deeper longer kiss. “That long?” he mumbles against Ronan’s lips. It’s not really a question, but it comes out that way.
“That long.” Ronan confirms, fingers combing through Adam’s hair, running down his face. It’s almost too much, this conversation and the emotions lighting up his chest. “Don’t let it go to your head, Parrish.” the admonition is softly spoken, paired with a kiss to Adam’s deaf ear.
“Wouldn’t dream of it.” Adam says, smile blooming.
This truly gets me bc it’s just so tender and intimate. And it’s something that happens casually sometimes, not just when they’re in bed together, but at casual and playful moments too. (Shout out to @bleachersmp3 for putting up with me while I wrote this 💕)
They’re at the barns and Adam is doing some reading in advance for class, except it’s not homework or anything required so he’s more relaxed than usual and reading while lying down on the couch. Ronan comes in from outside, takes one long look at Adam with his book and starts grinning. Adam is wearing Ronan’s clothes. He’s in Ronan’s black sweatpants, which pool around his feet and are a bit loose around the waist, and Ronan’s soft grey hoodie that Adam loves wearing but won’t admit to it. Ronan’s smile turns soft just looking at the drawstrings of the sweatpants pulled tight around Adam’s hips, and if that isn’t a sign of just how far gone he is for this boy, then Ronan really doesn’t know what is.
He walks over to Adam, only stopping to drop a quick kiss at the top of his head, then moves towards Adam’s legs. Adam pulls his legs momentarily away to make room for Ronan, then unceremoniously drops them onto Ronan’s lap once he’s seated. It takes Ronan a total of ten seconds to break the silence.
“What are you reading, nerd?”
This gets him a twitch of Adam’s lips, the hint of a smile, and a book raised pointedly to show him the title. No verbal response, but he can read Adam well enough to know he doesn’t mind a distraction at the moment.
“Thought you didn’t have any school work this weekend?”
Adam shrugs and pointedly keeps his eyes on his book, the ghost of a smile still present. It’s a challenge that Ronan is all too familiar with, and something that’s been happening more often now that the academic year is finally wrapping up. Adam being playful, Adam kissing him deep and slow then innocently saying “oh sorry, forgot I have an assignment to do” and laughing when Ronan groans, Adam looking up from a task he’s done with and issuing a challenge of there, you can distract me now. Adam, Adam, Adam..
Ronan never turns down a challenge.
“Is that my hoodie?” Ronan changes tactics now. If he can’t get a verbal response, he can definitely get a physical one. Adam nods once in affirmation. “Looks really fucking good on you.”
This does the trick. Adam looks up at him for a fraction of a second and it’s all that Ronan needs. Their eyes catch and hold. Adam’s cheeks bloom with colour, the redness of his cheeks standing out against his tan skin and making his freckles look darker. This isn’t the first time Ronan has told Adam that his clothes look good on him, and it isn’t the first time it has elicited a reaction either. Adam bites his lip, barely holding back a smile now.
“The sweatpants too,” Ronan rubs a thumb against Adam’s knee as he says this. “Though they’re a bit loose.”
Ronan’s hand sneaks up Adam’s leg, and Adam shakes his head; this isn’t fair play. But Ronan pays it no mind, because his hand lands on the bottom of Adam’s hoodie, bunches it up a bit -so that Ronan can lean down, and drop a kiss to Adam’s hip. He rubs Adam’s hipbone with his thumb and kisses it again. This part isn’t a game, it’s just habit.
Adam groans.
Ronan hears the thud of the book being dropped to the carpet, before he feels Adam’s hands tugging at his shoulders and pulling him closer, so that he’s practically lying on top of Adam now, arms braced on either side of his head.
Ronan gives him a wide grin, the victory swift and sweet.
“Hey” Ronan says, all casual.
“You,” Adam replies. “Are a menace.” His cheeks are still tinged with redness, his pupils blown wide, a smile lingering just around his lips. Ronan is so in love with him, his heart aches with it.
“Sorry man, weren’t you done reading?” Ronan asks, instead of caving in and kissing Adam like he desperately wants to.
“Fuck you,” Adam laughs, and the cursing, or the laughter, or both send sparks shooting down Ronan’s spine. Ronan kisses him. Screw the game, he’s won already, from the moment he said Adam’s name like a prayer on his birthday and Adam Parrish kissed him.
Adam smiles against his lips, as if reading his mind. He cradles Ronan’s face, looks at him, kisses him again and again and again.
Ronan kisses back, thinks that this is the one game Adam never minds losing, and then Adam reaches for his tshirt and he stops thinking altogether.
proposal anon here! adam’s mindlessly touching ronan’s hand-not just ronan’s hand, but his ring finger-and adam starts to think about marriage and how the only person he wants ronan to be married to is him. so adam asks “hey...who gets to propose?” and realizes that that in itself is a proposal. ronan stops for a second, goes white, and adam thinks he’s made a mistake— but then ronan gives adam a heart stopping grin and suggests his idea for them to both propose and god I love these two sm
a lot of the imagery in this ficlet is inspired by @cofidea‘s wonderful fanart
Adam lies with his head atop Ronan’s chest, toying with Ronan’s hand as they speak. The afternoon feels still and unhurried, the way only summer afternoons can feel. There’s a ray of sunshine creeping its way past the arm of the couch where they’re laying down and up their tangled legs. Adam watches its progression lazily, the way it illuminates some parts of them and casts others in shadows.
They speak quietly, the air only broken by a laugh or a scoff every now and then. Ronan’s right arm circles Adam’s waist, while his left hand is laying on his stomach where Adam can hold it and marvel at their intertwined fingers. The afternoon light with its slow progress distracts him, while the hum of Ronan’s voice makes him feel warm and fuzzy -the way only Ronan can make him feel.
Adam runs his fingers over Ronan’s left arm, gently touching the raised skin of his wrist, down his palm, moving to his fingers. Ronan speaks and Adam hums in acknowledgement. He intertwines their fingers together, looks at them just out of the light’s reach now. Ronan is saying something about going out for dinner, Adam runs a thump over his knuckles, gently runs his fingers over Ronan’s ring finger. His brain presents the image unbidden: if they were married, Ronan’s wedding ring would beautifully catch the light.
The thought sits with Adam for a few heartbeats, he can feel its weight against his chest. Not heavy nor unwanted, but something precious he can hold close to his heart. It’s not the first time he has thought something along these lines, but he hasn’t felt such a strong urge to voice it before. And so, within another heartbeat, he does.
“Which one of us gets to propose first?” Adam says conversely. Easy as asking about the weather outside. He realises even as he speaks that he had cut off Ronan mid-sentence and quickly looks up at him.
Ronan’s expression goes still, his hand tenses up in Adam’s, and then he loosens up all at once. His face a mosaic of emotions, all of them warmer than the afternoon sun. He looks at Adam in something resembling awe or reverence, his mouth slowly loosening into a smile.
“Fuck. Adam. I think you just did.” Ronan means for it to be light but his voice shakes. Adam makes note of it for later. He has heard Ronan’s voice in various tones of worship or despair, but this particular one is entirely new. Adam wants to hear it again.
“I think I have,” Adam agrees softly, still running his thump over Ronan’s ring finger. “I want to do it better though. More planned.”
Ronan takes in a shaky breath at this, his open smile reserved for Adam.
“I’ll propose first, but for real next time,” Adam’s voice is steady despite the emotions lighting up his chest. He is warm all over, his head full of light and Ronan’s smile. A distant part of him remembers the first time Ronan kissed him.
“Shit. So I have to wait for you to propose again?” Ronan says. “What if I want to propose?”
“Gotta wait your turn.” Adam laughs.
“That’s not fair, Parrish. Fuck. Is this what they’re teaching you in your fancy university?”
“That doesn’t make any sense.” Adam laughs again.
“You don’t make any sense,” Ronan says and moves to hover over Adam in one swift motion. “We’re kinda engaged.”
“I haven’t even given you a ring yet.” Excitement finally wins over. Adam’s voice shakes with it. “You haven’t said yes!”
“Yes!” Ronan crows “Fuck rings. I’ll dream us two rings right now.” He kisses Adam gently, at total contrast with his urgent tone. It’s sweet and slow, and lasts long enough that Adam almost loses track of the conversation. He pulls away, gently pokes Ronan in the stomach.
“Don’t you dare. I’m getting yours. You can dream mine if you want.”
“Adam.” Ronan groans, “You’re ruining my proposal plans.”
“You thought of it?” Adam asks, breathless and so full of love. Ronan answers this with a kiss followed by countless more kisses.
They play fight and they laugh and they kiss with the frantic energy that comes with the promise of love and happiness. Ronan takes Adam’s left hand in his own, kissing the palm of it, and then softly kissing Adam’s ring finger.
By the time they settle back down into their previous position, the light has shifted into something brighter yet softer, mirroring Adam’s own feelings -his emotions made manifest. Adam kisses Ronan’s jaw, the side of his neck, then rests his head back down against Ronan’s shoulder.
Adam listens to the sound of Ronan’s breathing, feels the steady beat of Ronan’s heart, looks to where he was tracking the sunlight earlier. Against Ronan’s chest, their intertwined hands are engulfed by light.
all I can think about tonight is adam during his first year of uni waking up next to ronan, after a couple of months of not seeing each other, and looking over to find a dreamt-up promise ring cupped in ronan’s fingers. adam lightly traces the ring and ronan’s palm with his own fingers until ronan can move again from the dream, then takes the ring and wears it on his left hand. he keeps wearing it until ronan actually proposes to him a couple of years later, and then he replaces it with an engagement ring but keeps the promise ring as a memory
Just imagine the mixture of delight, smugness, and bashfulness Adam feels when he accidentally stumbles upon a playlist titled ‘Adam’ on Ronan’s phone while they are on a drive, and opens it to find one sappy love song after the other. Ronan wears a look of exasperation (read: embarrassment) mixed with a stubborn “yeah, so what?” when Adam, who sounds like he’s biting down delighted laughter, asks him about it. He then has to pull over bc he just needs to kiss the smile on Adam’s face repeatedly, and maybe hide his face against Adam’s neck as he confesses that this playlist has been in the making since their very first kiss.
okay but how do you think adam spent his 19th birthday? and do ronan and he have any birthday traditions going forward? im so emotional on this fine sunday morning
Ah I’m so glad you asked bc I too am very emotional about pynch on this fine sunday morning. I think adam’s 19th birthday is one of his most memorable ones solely because it’s the first birthday he spends feeling truly happy and at ease:
on adam’s 19th birthday (and on all birthdays after that) he gets woken up by ronan peppering kisses all over his face. a swift gentle peck on his lips, another one to his cheek, his forehead, his nose, his lips again and again and again, until they’re both smiling. ronan kisses adam’s hearing ear and murmurs a “morning” closely followed by “happy birthday” and adam’s heart seizes with happiness
it usually takes them sometime to actually get out of bed on summer days (with adam’s birthday being in July) but this day is different because ronan wants them to take advantage of the entire day. he takes adam’s hand and pulls him up so they can stumble their way to the kitchen, exchanging sleepy kisses and with arms thrown around middles and shoulders; adam sleepily walking with his head kinda tucked into the crook of ronan’s neck while ronan fondly calls him a ‘lazy bastard’
their first birthday tradition is pancakes and waffles made from the same mix because there’s no reasoning with ronan and
“it just looks fancier, parrish. pancakes and waffles.”
“you literally made it from the exact same batter. I saw you. using a waffle iron doesn’t change the facts.”
“doesn’t matter, babe. it’s still waffles.”
and they have them with chocolate spread and strawberries and strawberry jam and honey and maple syrup bc ronan makes enough for a small army. which is good bc opal soon joins them and she has her waffles with twigs
speaking of that, adam’s first gift of the day is a rock that’s always warm to the touch and changes colours from a deep green to translucent blue to golden brown depending on who’s holding it. opal says she found it in the woods and it reminded her of him, so adam takes it and kisses her forehead as a thank you
after breakfast, adam and ronan go out to inspect one of the barns bc ronan claims he needs help with something. adam is onto him but plays along and when they arrive it’s to one of the dreamt up pools of water scattered around the barns. except that ronan has somehow added a slide to the edge of it
ronan explains that the slide was in one of the barns already, and offhandedly says that all he had to do was clean it up and move it to the pool (as if it’s your typical afternoon activity) then tells adam to ‘give it a spin’
the resulting morning is one of laughter, water fights, and making a mess. they take turns sliding into the cool water, and then talk opal into doing it too but then have to fight her for a turn (actually adam just has to ask) once she gets into the game. they stay in the water until afternoon and get out sunburnt and joyous.
the rest of their afternoon is spent making a cake for adam’s birthday and this too becomes a tradition. ronan prepares the batter and mixes it and sets the oven to bake it and all, while adam sits to the side carefully choosing colours for the decoration with opal. there’s music playing as they all work on it, and ronan keeps glancing up at adam and grinning when he gets caught. adam hops off of his perch on the counter-top multiple times to steal kisses from ronan and wipe flour and cocoa powder off of his cheek (he just smears it more lbr)
the cake decoration is a messy affair that takes longer than anyone anticipated, and the end result is a monstrosity of colours and toppings that ronan frowns at and adam adores
ronan says “this looks like shit” and adam shakes his head with the biggest smile and tells him it’s exactly what he wanted. adam looks at the cake and says “god. I love you.”, ronan answers “you talking to me or the cake?” with a shit eating grin that only widens when adam rolls his eyes
this is followed by them sharing a long look and adam reaching up to kiss ronan until he drives home just how much he believes the cake (the day, ronan, this) to be beautiful.
(ronan tells him he loves him back. of course he does.)
in the evening, he and ronan take a walk through the barns as they often do and ronan leads them to one of the smaller barns where he has set up a little fun fair with dumb games. there are balloons everywhere, lights, a little table with treats on it and the cake they made, and there are your usual fair games like throwing a sandbag at stacked bottles, water guns, throwing hoops and for each one of them there’s a small present ronan prepared. no matter who wins the game, adam gets the present. there are five gifts in total but they’re all pretty small things that make adam’s heart swell with happiness
there’s a mixtape titled ‘adam parrish’s nerd study time, college edition’, a tiny odd plant with a sticky note saying ‘for your dorm’ on it, a black hoodie that says ‘dreamer’ (ronan gleefully bought this one online like an asshole), a snowball with a miniature of the barns inside (inspired by this post), and finally a framed picture of the two of them in st agnes that adam is 100% sure is a dream product because he doesn’t remember the picture being taken
adam loves each one of his gifts and pulls ronan into a tight hug after receiving the last one
“tomorrow,” ronan murmurs “we’ll meet with everyone else and have cake again. we’ll watch the fireworks they put up for you a day late.”
“these would be 4th of july fireworks, lynch”
“nope. they are ‘adam parrish turned 19 yesterday’ fireworks, parrish”
and adam just nods to this and hides his smile against ronan’s shoulder, feeling content and in love, knowing all the birthdays to come will be spent with ronan and their small family just like today and that they will all be filled with love
its adam anon again :)) i forgot that ronan canonically likes reading in his free time and i suddenly pictured adam laying with his head in ronan's lap while ronan reads aloud to him and his spare hand plays with adam's hair or strokes his cheek or holds his hand... its about the tenderness babyyy
god, adam anon, the tenderness of this kills me! it also makes me think of all the times they do this and how it becomes a habit:
the first time it happens, adam is studying at the barns. adam looks up to see ronan sat on the couch reading a book, so he walks over to him, mutters that he’s on a break and lays his head on ronan’s shoulder. ronan brushes a kiss over adam’s forehead then goes to put the book down, but adam gently grabs his arm and says “read to me.”, and so ronan does.
it becomes a habit that if ronan is reading a book, then adam is bound to hear some of it read to him at some point. it happens when adam is on study breaks, when ronan is sleeping over at st agnes, over the summer while they’re sharing a hammock outside, or on weekends with adam’s head pillowed in the crook of ronan’s neck
sometimes when adam has woken up from a nightmare or is having one of these nights where he’s too tired to instantly fall asleep, ronan grabs his favourite poetry book and starts reading out loud from it while adam’s head is on his chest and he’s slowly falling asleep to ronan’s voice. it also helps that ronan keeps running his fingers through adam’s hair as he reads
it keeps going even when adam has moved away for college during their late night phonecalls. near the end of the call, when adam’s eyes are too heavy to keep open but he’s missing ronan too much to hang up, he repeats what he said the very first time “read to me?” and ronan complies. he reads from novels, latin poetry, a childhood storybook he found.. whatever he reads, adam finds soothing and can hear the smile in ronan’s voice whenever he reacts to something ronan read.
bonus: sometimes, when it’s ronan who can’t sleep, adam stays up just to hear him reading bc he knows that it helps ronan too and grounds him. and if ronan can’t do the reading himself bc he’s not feeling well, then adam gently takes the book from ronan’s shaking hands to replace it with one of his own, and then he reads to ronan
