some food for thought about the change in pace / cadence of the newest season of Game of Thrones.
if any novel / series was given eight years to play out , at a certain point, all that world building and set up for the climax ( hint: this season and the next ) HAS to slow down, or stop altogether . I understand we’ve grown use to the endless grit, the grim and dark, the losses of some of our favorite characters throughout the years ; but this is IT, next season is the last so there’s only so much more they can grind away it .
Daenerys arrival to Westeros , Jon taking on the Night King have been hinted at since the very beginning, building up to where we now stand. I know there’s a lot of idealism, but seeing as GRRM modeled his story’s end after LotR , I think its safe to say we can assume a degree of relief in knowing that.
EVERYTHING has been condensing to this , the battle of five kings , with none of them left . the shifting views of the lord of light, throughout the show, and now we settle on the endgame. There’s no more ascension, there’s climax, resolution, and plateau. It CANNOT be 100mph anymore, there’s nothing left to give because everything else has already happened.
I understand a great many complaints with the show, i’ve only read the first three books myself and i LOVED them, but I treat them, and the HBO interpretation as two wholly different things ( now, i also independently recognize a lot of the problematic things d&d has done, this is not the point of what i’m saying , so don’t think i’m condoning the whole in defense of some pieces ).
The whole shifting time frames / seemingly improbable travel speed -- they’re past the point of implication now, we’ve spent entire SEASONS traversing a single area and now the journey is no longer the point, the last six years have been the journey . We’re at the destination, the end, minutia is going to be skimmed over in an attempt to compartmentalize ALL of this, the totality of two massive wars , a million different possibilities. I KNOW that we’ve grown use to things progressing in a certain way but that was then, this is now, this is IT folks there’s nothing else after next season.
Crescendos can take a while to peak , but when they do, and the song ends, you’re not complaining about how long it took to get there.
